WB 18.10.21
Date: 14th Oct 2021 @ 8:18am
Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?
I can’t quite believe we are looking ahead to the final week of the half term. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. We have had another excellent week in Skylarks Class!
Next week (W.B. 18.10.21)
In our English lesson next week, we will be using our plans produced this week to help us write a sequence of diaries entries in role as Annie Edson Taylor. We will be recapping the mastery keys learnt in this topic and applying these in our writing (e.g. using paragraphs, using commas after fronted adverbial and writing for an intended audience/purpose).
In maths we will be looking at mental calculations and inverse operations. We will also be applying our knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction to help use solve tricky problems.
In science we will continue our learning on soluble and insoluble materials. The children will work collaboratively to plan their own investigations to find out which factors affect the rate of dissolving. The children must choose which variables to keep the same and which to change, ensuring they plan a fair test.
In RE we will bring together all of our learning from our Discipleship topic to answer the following questions: How does the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ help people to follow Jesus? How does Jesus want Christians to live out each verse in their lives?
During our topic day we will begin to look at our Year 5 theme of ‘Identity’. We will be thinking about our own identity and the identity of Northwich by sharing what we know already.
Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.
Homework
In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.
If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.
The children should complete pages 12 and 13 of their maths book to be returned by Thursday 21st October. This homework is looking written addition and subtraction.
Please encourage your child to use column method which we have learnt in school.
Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button
Our spellings for the quiz on Thursday 21st October will be the next 10 words in the Y5/6 statutory word list:
available, average, awkward, bargain, bruise, category, cemetery, committee, communicate, community
Please remember that the words from the Y5/6 list are trickier than our spellings which follow a specific spelling rule. If your child is finding them really difficult, encourage them to focus on just 5 words to learn rather than all 10 ?
Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!
