Next week (W.B. 22.05.23)
In our English lessons next week, we will use our plans the model text to write our own autobiographies about Malala Yousafzai. We will focus on using the feature and mastery keys we have been focusing on this half term, including using a wide range of conjunctions, brackets to indicate parenthesis and adverbials of time and place.
In shared reading we will continue to read our text ‘Exploring Space’. We will be focussing on ‘Drawing Inferences’ and language choice. We will look at how the author’s language choice contributes to the meaning. We will also draw inferences about people’s thoughts and feelings based on evidence from the text.
In maths we will be focussing on find the area of shapes, including rectangles and compound shapes. We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In History and Geography, we will continue with our whole school topic on ‘Home’. We will be using our learning on Malala Yousafzai in English to explore further her journey out of Pakistan: where she travelled from/to, the reasons why and what it was like for her being a refugee.
In Science we will begin our new topic on Earth and Space by thinking about what we already know and what we would like to find out.
In Art we will be applying all of the sketching skills we have acquired this half term in a final piece of artwork based on our ‘Home’ topic.
Our PE day for the Spring Term will be a Wednesday so your child should come to school in their PE kit on this day. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.
If your child is finding the homework tricky, please do let Mr Beswick or myself know so that we can offer them support in school.

In our English lessons next week, we will explore a model text – an autobiography of Ruby Bridges. We will analyse the structure, vocabulary and features of the text which will help us to plan and write our own autobiography for Malala.
In shared reading we will continue to read our text ‘Exploring Space’. We will be focussing on ‘Drawing Inferences’ and language choice. We will look at how the author’s language choice contributes to the meaning.
In maths we will be focussing on finding the perimeter of different shapes, including rectilinear shapes and polygons. We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In Science we will begin by making predictions about which animals will have the shortest and longest gestation periods, before using research to find out if our prediction were in fact correct.
In RE we will read a letter from Paul to the Church taken from 2 Corinthians. We will explore what the verses means and the advice Paul is giving to the people. We will then relate Paul’s advice to what we already know about God and forgiveness.
In History and Geography, we will continue with our whole school topic on ‘Home’. We will be looking at the statistics of where refuges travel to and discussing what the UK could be doing further to support displaced people.
In Art we will continue to explore sketching techniques further and look at how to draw bodies in proportion and realistic faces.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?

On Friday 5th May, we are celebrating the King's coronation. We are all going to be coming into school wearing red, white and blue or just red or just white or just blue is fine, we don't have to have all three. Mrs Macey is making a gorgeous picnic that we will all eat together on the field, or your child is welcome to bring their own packed lunch from home. The head students have held a competition to design the biscuit and they will choose the winners with Mrs Macey. We will be having a service in church led by Vicar Andrew and throughout the day the children will take part in activities to both celebrate the coronation help the children really understand the events of the weekend.

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to read more of ‘Malala’s Magic Pencil’ by Malala Yousafzai. We will explore a variety of informal writing techniques and use these to plan and write a diary entry and a blog post.
In shared reading we will continue to read our text ‘Exploring Space’. We will be focussing on ‘Drawing Inferences’. We will use our visualising techniques to infer characters’ thoughts, feelings and emotions.
In maths we will be focussing on finding equivalent fractions and decimals. We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In RE we will use drama techniques to role play scenarios were forgiveness was not shown. We will then discuss how we could change each scenario to follow God’s word.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
This week we have been super busy in Skylarks Class. The children have been working very hard on their end of term assessments, they have enjoyed celebrating British Science Week and had a fantastic afternoon in Forest Schools on Tuesday. Some of our classmates, along with other children in KS2, have also represented our school in football and cross country competitions this week. Well done to everybody who took part.
Next week (W.B. 20.03.23)
Tomorrow, Years 5 and 6 will attend Wincham Primary School for an online safety workshop. Children may come to school in their own clothes for Comic Relief, however Skylarks Class must wear a school jumper for our trip out.
In our English lessons next week, we will begin to explore our new book ‘Malala’s Magic Pencil’ by Malala Yousafzai. We will explore what Human Rights are and discuss the specific rights that children have. We will then begin to read the book, discussing the themes and conventions along the way.
In shared reading we will begin to read our new text ‘Exploring Space’. We will be focussing on ‘Drawing Inferences’. We will use our visualising techniques to infer characters’ thoughts, feelings and emotions.
In maths we will be moving on to learn how to multiply fractions and mixed numbers by an integer. We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In Science we will be comparing the life cycles of two different plants; one which lives in our local area and one which lives in the desert. We will use a variety of sources to answer questions about how the reproduce and what climate they thrive in.
In Art we will continue to explore the Viking ‘Jelling’ style to create a final piece of art using intricate and interlocking patterns. We will then evaluate our work.

Another hard-working week in Year 5. The children particularly enjoyed our science show this morning to kick off British Science Week.
Next week (W.B. 13.03.23)
We have a very exciting week next week to look forward to. Firstly, we will be engaging with a variety of fun science activities to celebrate British Science Week. We will also take part in Forest Schools on Tuesday afternoon. Please send your child to school in old, comfortable clothes and a waterproof coat. On Friday, Years 5 and 6 will attend Wincham Primary School for an online safety workshop.
In our English lessons next week, we will be editing our free verse poems to ensure use of all the poetic devices, including similes, metaphors, rhyme and kennings. We will then work on our performance techniques to perform to an audience.

We have had a super first week back after the half term. The children particularly enjoyed celebrating World Book Day on Wednesday and looked fantastic in their costumes!

In our English lessons next week, we will continue our work on poetry. We will be using our learning from this week to help us write our own free verse poems using similes and metaphors.
In our shared reading lessons, we will be focussing on word meaning. We will analyse the author’s language choice and discuss its effectiveness.
In maths we will be continuing to develop our confidence when using formal written methods of multiplication and division. We will solve word problems and explore open-ended questions. We will also consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In Science we will be studying four different types of asexual reproduction in plans. The children will research how different plants can reproduce through cuttings, runners, bulbs and tubers.
In History and Geography, we will continue to learn about Viking life through asking questions and research. We will use what we find out to help us answer our enquiry question, ‘Where the Vikings ruthless killers or peaceful settlers?’
In Art we will be exploring the Viking ‘Jelling’ style frequently used on their armour and weapons. We will practice out sketching techniques to create intricate and interlocking designs.
In RE we will explore our new theme of ‘forgiveness’. We will look at examples of forgiveness in the bible and reflect on how we should live our lives.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
What a super week we have had, especially on Tuesday when we visited Tatton Old Hall. The children represented in school so beautifully and learnt so much about what life was like for the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
I can’t believe we have reached the end of another half term already! I want to wish you all a fun-filled and restful week – hopefully the spring sunshine will make an appearance.
First week back (W.B. 27.02.23)
On Wednesday 1st March, we will celebrate Lostock’s World Book Day where we will spend the day exploring new books, poems and authors ? The children are invited to come to school in their own clothes, pyjamas or dressed as their favourite book character.
HOME- Our new whole school topic
After half term we will begin our new whole school topic- Home. This has been planned around the theme of the importance of our homes to us and the human conflicts and natural disasters that result in homelessness for others. We are hoping to use photographs of our children’s homes as part of our displays. If you would like to, please send or e-mail a photo/copy of your home into school after half term. Thank you.
In our English lessons after half term, we will be focusing on performance poetry. We will learn about the language devices which appear in poems such as similes and metaphors, as well as how to perform them in front of an audience.
In maths we will be moving on to look at dividing four digit numbers by 1 digit. We will also continue to consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4 a day activities.
In Science, we will be learning about the reproduction of flowering plants. We will draw and label a scientific diagram, identifying the male and female reproductive organs and will complete a life cycle for a chosen plant.
In History and Geography, we will be using maps to locate where the Viking came from and we will think about the chronology of events, including the Viking raids and introduction of Danelaw.
In Art, we will begin to focus on the ‘Jelling Style’ of Viking artwork. We will spend time observing and analysing the techniques used before experimenting with these sketching techniques to create this style of artwork ourselves.
In Music, Skylarks will continue with their ukulele tuition.
In RE will be thinking about our new theme of ‘Forgiveness’.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
What a great week we have had in Skylarks Class! The highlight has definitely been watching the children create their final pieces of artwork inspired by Monet and Turner. Their proud smiles at the end of the process were wonderful to see; they showed great perseverance.
Next week (W.B. 23.01.23)
In our English lessons next week, we will continue to read our new book ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. We will be focussing on how to make our writing more cohesive by effectively using fronted adverbials. We will also focus on developing our vocabulary to describe the character Arthur, before writing a character description.
In our shared reading lessons, we will begin to read ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be focussing on drawing inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives, as well as making comparisons.
In maths we will continue to focus on adding and subtracting fractions. We will also continue to consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4 a day activities.
In our topic lesson, we will be using a range of sources including iPads, books and images to help us find out more about Anglo Saxon Britain.
In science we will continue with our new topic about Living Things and their Habitats. We will be learning about the life cycle of both birds and mammals and will compare them using a Venn diagram.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
Another super week in Skylarks Class. The children have loved learning about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings, and reading our new class text ‘Arthur and the golden rope’.

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to read our new book ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. We will be learning how to integrate dialogue into a story to advance the action and how to use adverbial phrases to link paragraphs.
In our shared reading lessons, we will begin to read ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be focussing on drawing inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives. We will use our ‘thinking out loud’ and ‘visualising’ techniques to help us infer information stated and implied.
In maths we will be focussing on adding and subtracting fractions. We will also continue to consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4 a day activities.
In our topic lesson, we will be using our geography skills to locate the Anglo Saxon Kingdoms and were they travelled from.
In science we will begin our new topic about Living Things and their Habitats. We will be learning about conservation and inspirational people such as David Attenborough who dedicate their life to keeping animals and their habitats safe.
In RE we will begin our new topic on ‘Humanism’, focussing on the 5 key humanist themes/beliefs.
Our PE day for the Spring Term will be a Wednesday so your child should come to school in their PE kit on this day. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.
If your child is finding the homework tricky, please do let Mr Beswick or myself know so that we can offer them support in school.

Message about PE: Skylarks will do PE on a Wednesday during the Spring Term. They should come to school in their PE kit and trainers on this day.

In our English lessons next week, we will begin to read our new book ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’ by Joe Todd-Stanton. We will develop our knowledge of Norse Mythology to help us understand the context of the story. We will recap expanded noun phrases and learn about relative clauses to help us write a free verse poem.
In our shared reading lessons, we will begin to read ‘Odd and the Frost Giants’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be focussing on drawing inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives. In our topic lesson, we will begin our new learning on the Anglo Saxons and Vikings. We will begin this topic by thinking about what we know already and completing a timeline activity to help us understanding this time period.
In science we will begin our new topic about Living Things and their Habitats. We will begin by sharing any knowledge we already have and thinking about what we would like to find out.
In RE we will begin our new topic on ‘Humanism’. In our first lesson we will generate our own questions that we would like to explore over the coming weeks.
In Art, we will be applying our knowledge of tint, tone and shade to create a piece of work inspired by Monet or Turner. We will also self and peer assess our work.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
Another great week in Skylarks Class. We thoroughly enjoyed making our Christingles and visiting our lovely Church on Monday. The rehearsals for the Christmas production are also in full swing and we can’t wait for you to come and watch it next week.
Next week (W.B. 5.12.22)
Our Christmas Production ‘Matilda’ will take place on Wednesday 7th December at 1pm and 5pm and Thursday 8th December at 5pm. The children in Years 3, 4 and 5 will all be dressed as school children. Please send your child to school in full school uniform, including school shoes. The children will wear their school trousers or skirt for the performances and school will provide a shirt and tie for each child. If you have any spare white shirts at home (any size appropriate for Years 3-5) we would greatly appreciate any donations. Girls must have their hair tied back in a neat hairstyle and wear shorts/tights under their skirt.
In our English lessons next week, we will use our story maps from this week to help us innovate and plan our own traditional tales inspired by ‘The Lost Happy Endings’. We will then use these plans to begin to write our own story applying all of our learning from this half term.
In our shared reading lessons, we will continue to read ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be focusing on language and will evaluate the author’s language choice, including the use of figurative language.
In maths we will be moving on to learn about fractions; in particular equivalent fractions. We will also continue to consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4 a day activities.
In our topic lesson, we will be reflecting on our trip to the Lion Salt Works and will be using research to answer any outstanding questions we have about the Salt Works and the impact the salt industry had on Northwich.

Another super week in Skylarks Class. The highlight of our week was definitely visiting the Lion Salt Works on Tuesday. The children represented our school so beautifully and engaged with all of the different activities with such enthusiasm.

In our English lessons next week, we will finish reading our book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy. We will continue to focus on the different characters we have come across in the story and how we can convey their character through action and speech. We will also create a journey map to summarise the main events in the story which will help us to plan and write our own traditional tale over the coming weeks.
In our shared reading lessons, we will continue to read ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be focusing on language and will evaluate the author’s language choice, including the use of figurative language.
In maths we will be recapping prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers, before moving on to learn how to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000. We will also continue to consolidate our understanding of the four operations through daily 4 a day activities.
In our topic lesson, we will be learning about the Anderton Boat Lift and how it impacted the salt industry in Northwich. We will also think about the negative impact that the salt industry had on the local people and infrastructure.
In RE we will be reflecting on our learning from this half term. We will be recapping the titles which are given to Jesus and Christmas Time and deciding why they are helpful in describing Jesus’ role on Earth.

Another fantastic week in Skylarks Class. I can’t believe we are looking ahead to the final week of this half term. What a super 7 weeks it has been!

In our shared reading lessons, we will be reading about the inspirational women in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will continue to focus on drawing inferences and justifying our answers with evidence.
In maths we will continue to focus on the place value of numbers and will be working on reading and writing Roman Numerals to 1000. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In science we will be using our plans from last week to carry out our experiment to answer the question: Which container will help to keep my lunch the coldest? We will then look at the different ways we can present our findings.

In maths we will continue to focus on the place value of numbers to 1,000,000. We will be learning how to round numbers to the nearest 100,000; 10,000; 1,000; 100 and 10. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In science we will be working collaboratively to plan an investigation to answer the following question: Which container will help to keep my lunch the coldest?
In RE we will continue to think about the Sermon on the Mount and the key messages we can learn from these verses.
During our topic day we will continue to look at our Year 5 theme of ‘Identity’. We will be learning how to read and write 6 figure grid references to locate human and physical features in our school ground and then Northwich.
Our PE days for the first Autumn term will be Thursday (Cricket) and Friday with Mr Ault so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.
Homework
In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.
If your child is finding the homework tricky, please do let Mr Beswick or myself know so that we can offer them support in school.
The children should complete page 9 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 7th October. This homework is looking at place value.
Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 7th October will be the first 10 words from the Year 5/6 statutory word list:
accommodate, accompany, according, achieve, aggressive, amateur, ancient, apparent, appreciate, attached
These words are more difficult than previous spellings which follow a specific spelling rule. If your child is struggling to learn all of the words, please encourage them to choose 5 or 6 to focus on.

Hello everyone and welcome to Skylarks weekly blog! ?
What a great week we have had in Skylarks Class. I am particularly impressed with the effort the children have put into their writing this week!
Next week (W.B. 26.09.22)
Thursday 29th September 2022 – Y5 Forest Schools – The children in Skylarks Class will be taking part in forest schools on this day (morning). Please send your child to school in old, comfortable clothes; trainers and a waterproof coat. The children may also bring wellies in a plastic bag if they have them (weather permitting). Children should also bring their uniform and school shoes which they will get changed into should they get wet or muddy during our forest school morning.
In our English lessons next week, we will read more of our book ‘Queen of the Falls’. We will be focusing on writing in role as we write letter to Annie Edson Taylor as one of her friends. We will also analyse the different viewpoints that people held of Annie, including her friend and her manager.
In our shared reading lessons, we will be reading about the inspirational women in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will continue to focus on drawing inferences and justifying our answers with evidence.

In RE we will be thinking about the Sermon on the Mount. We will read ‘Salt and Light’ from Matthew 5:13-15 and explain how these verses help people to follow Jesus today.
During our topic day we will continue to look at our Year 5 theme of ‘Identity’. We will be learning about the counties of the UK, using maps and atlases to locate both Cheshire and Northwich.
Our PE days for the first Autumn term will be Thursday (Cricket) and Friday with Mr Ault so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue.

We have had another super week in Skylarks Class. The children have worked so hard and produced some super work.

Hello everyone and welcome to Skylarks first weekly blog! ?
The children in Skylarks Class have had a FANTASTIC first week back in school and I am so proud of how quickly they have settled back into school routines and how hard they are working.
Next week (W.B. 12.09.22)
There will be a ‘meet the teacher’ evening at school on Wednesday 14th September at 3:15pm, 3:45pm, 4:45pm or 5:15pm for anyone who would like to find out what goes on in Year 5.
In our English lessons next week, we will find out more about the daredevil feat carried out by Annie Edson Taylor and will use this to help us write a first-person recount from the viewpoint of one of the anxious bystanders. We will be focusing on using commas after fronted adverbials and organising paragraphs around a theme.
In our shared reading lessons we will be reading about the inspirational women in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will focus on drawing inferences and justifying our answers with evidence .
In maths we will be focusing on the place value of numbers to 100,000. We will place these numbers on a number line and will compare them using more than and less than symbols. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.
In science we will begin to explore our new topic all about materials. The children will plan their own investigations to help them explore the properties of a variety of everyday materials.
In RE we will be thinking about what we already know about Jesus’ teachings. We will consider what the bible says about how Christians should live, which will lead us into our new topic about the sermon on the mount.
During our topic day we will begin to look at our Year 5 theme of ‘Identity’. We will be thinking about our own identity and the identity of Northwich by sharing what we know already.
