Hello everyone and welcome back to Starling's weekly blog ?

We hope you have all had a restful week and have enjoyed the jubilee celebrations.

 

 

The weather is looking good for sports day on Friday.  Please make sure your child has sunscreen on when they arrive at school, a hat and a labelled water bottle.

As part of our Explorers, theme Starlings class will be Environmental Explorers this half term. In our history and geography lessons, we will continue with our whole school 'Global Neighbours' project where Starlings will explore Global Goal number 15 'Life on Land.

Starlings will be exploring how we can reduce, reuse and recycle our unwanted items.  We will also be exploring how we can protect, restore and promote our planet's insects, animals and plants. We will also be exploring ways of how we can reduce the number of single-use plastic items we use particularly in our lunchboxes.  We have carried out our survey and once we have collated our responses we will be investigating alternatives to single-use plastic in our lunchbox.  We will also be testing different materials to find out which are the best for keeping our sandwiches fresh and dry.

English

We all thoroughly enjoyed the class text ‘Goldilocks and just the one bear’ and the children wrote the most amazing pieces of work. 

This week, in account of the platinum jubilee we will be completing some writing around the text ‘The Queen’s hat’ by Steve Antony.  We will then move on to ‘Toys in Space by Mini Grey. 

 

 

 

Maths

This week we will be looking at division and how we can share into different groups.

We will complete a spelling quiz in class every Friday. Please use your spelling whiteboard to help you to learn your spellings each week. We will write your child's score in their diary each week. This will be written next to the spellings they have been tested on that day. This will be on the page of the previous weeks.

 Bear has finally met Goldilocks after all this time! The children enthusiastically got into character and modelled the conversation they thought they would have.

This week we have written a diary entry from Bear describing his day in the city and all the things he saw.  We thought it hilarious that the bed was too frothy and the chair too spiky.  Silly Bear had sat in the bath and then on a cactus!!

We are also going to make bird feeders as part of our work on reducing, reusing and recycling plastic containers.  We are looking for empty yoghurt pots or anything else of a similar size, please.

This week has seen Bear enter Snooty Towers to escape the noisy street.  We explored different rooms and used our phonics knowledge to label the different nouns we spotted and also included an adjective.

In maths, this week Starlings have looked at measuring weight and volume.  We have used our knowledge to first of all estimate which items were the heaviest before using our hands or the balance scale to compare.

This week has seen Bear enter the city and he is feeling quite perturbed with the unfamiliar noises.  Along Princess Avenue we have noticed shops such as Mr B.G.Gruffs hairdressers, Beanstalk Bank an The Glass Slipper to name a few!  Starlings have created their own shop names where we have focused on ensuring these have capital letters as they are proper nouns.

 

Maths

In maths, this week Starlings have looked at measuring length using non-standard forms of measurement and standard forms.  Next week we will be looking at weight and volume.

This week we have been 'hooked' on our new class text and we have made predictions as to what we think the story may be about using the clues presented. So far we think it is a story about Baby Bear now that he has grown up.  Will our predictions be right?

We have started reading our class text.  So far Oscar has been woken up by a strange noise and discovered a woolly mammoth whose name is Timothy!  Timothy is looking for his little brother Teddy.  Oscar and Timothy have chased him up the steps to the museum where they have discovered many strange happenings.

 

 

Maths

In maths Starlings class have been looking at numbers up to 50.  We have been counting forwards and backwards and discussing what is one more and one less than different numbers. We have then partitioned two-digit numbers into tens and ones.

 

In Religion we have been exploring Good News.  We have discussed how we might share news and we thought about how we take photographs to remember lovely times we have experienced and how we might send these to families and friends. We also discussed good new stories in the bible and we remembered God’s beautiful creation, Jesus being born and Jesus rising on Easter Sunday.

In history we are going to be looking at Mary Anning and the impact she had not only as a palaeontologist but as an influential woman.

 In Science, we continue to explore the topic of animals and humans.  We will be looking at answering some of the questions we wanted to find the answer to before the holidays.

Starlings were asked to investigate a strange occurrence in the playground this week.  We tiptoed out and found bones!! We thought about why they were there, who had left them and what animal they might have come from. Maybe when we start reading our new class text we will discover the answers to our questions.

In maths Starlings class are working on using the < (less than, smaller than) > (greater than, more than) and = (equal to) symbols.

This week in English we have been writing about how Mouse would feel when he came nose to nose with lion.  We have been writing exclamative sentences to add drama to our writing

Maths

Starlings class are looking at numbers up to 20. This week we have learned how to use our number bonds to help with the subtraction of 1-digit numbers.  We have developed our skills by applying our new knowledge to help us work out challenging word problems.

 

In Religion, we are looking at the wonder of God’s creation.  We have already been out for a walk in the school grounds and explored the beauty of our outdoor world using our senses. In history, we are looking at some of the inventions in transport and looking at how vehicles have changed over the years and why. This past week we looked at ‘The Flying Scotsman’ and how its improved people’s lives

 In Science, we continue to explore the topic of animals and humans.  This week we have used our senses to spot signs of winter.  We also discussed the appropriate clothing we should wear in winter.

In Religion, we are looking at the wonder of God’s creation.  We have already been out for a walk in the school grounds and explored the beauty of our outdoor world using our senses. In history, we are looking at some of the inventions in transport and looking at how vehicles have changed over the years and why. This past week we have researched George Stephenson and discussed how important his invention of ‘The Rocket’ has been and the impact it has on our lives today.

. In Science, we continue to explore the topic of animals and humans.  This week we have discussed what we would like to find out ourselves.  So far, we are going to research why some people have allergies and what is the fastest animal on earth?

This week we have looked at an image from the book and written about what we could see with a focus on using adjectives to make our writing more interesting.  We really enjoyed watching the opening scene from ‘The Lion King’ and seeing all the different animals. The children then chose their favourite animal from the clip and write sentences describing them and how they moved.

This past week we have explored how people travelled 100 years ago.  We decided that having to walk everywhere or ride a horse would mean our journey would take much longer than it would in a car today  In geography we will continue with our exploration of the United Kingdom and locate other places as we explore our topic. In Science, we have looked at classifying animals.  Initially, we classified them into our own groups – animals with legs, animals that can fly, animals that live in water etc.  We then watched a film clip about reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, mammals and insects and the children worked in groups to classify pictures of animals using this information.

We have had such a lovely week.  We have been practising the songs for our Christmas play and I have to say we are so proud of how well they are doing and they already sound amazing!

We are also loving the enthusiasm and excitement the children are showing with our new class text ‘Nibbles’.  The work they have already produced  is fantastic

Thank you so much for all the ‘junk modelling’ you kindly brought in for the children.   They had a fantastic ‘tinkering’ session where they designed and built a vehicle after which we tested it for strength and suitability.  We discovered that we needed to design something that would enable the wheels to turn and we also needed something stronger than a straw to support the wheels!

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog! We have had another super week of learning in Starlings Class ?.

 

I have really enjoyed talking to you and letting you know how fantastically well your little Starling has settled into Year 1.

Thank you so much for your continued support, Mrs Southern and I  really appreciate it.

Our gorgeous Starlings, together with the other children in KS1, have really enjoyed attending worship in the hall. We have also all been on a tour of the school as this is a brand-new experience for them all.

We continue to be proud of all our Starlings as they continue to try their best and work hard in their lessons.

Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy sharing stories with your Starling at home this week. The children will continue to bring home a Read Write Inc book, a book bag book and a bedtime story each week. This provides them with a variety of familiar, new and challenging texts to read. Bedtime storybooks are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our text ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.  We have been discussing how the different characters have felt during the story and we will be continuing with this next week when we create an emotions graph together.  We have also been enjoying our additional class text ‘Meerkat mail’ by Emily Gravett. So Far Sunny has left home and has sent a postcard to his family telling them of his adventures.

Next week we will be continuing exploring the composition of numbers 0-5 before progressing on to the composition of numbers 6-10.

This will be written next to the spellings they have been tested on that day. This will be on the page of the previous week's.

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our text ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.  We have already used clues from the text to make predictions about what the story may be about. We have also helped out at the ‘Lost and Found'  office where we wrote labels for the missing animals!

Maths

In maths, we will be continuing to compare quantities and measures up to 10.  This week we have used our maths resources to support our learning of greater than, less than and equal to.  Next week we will be exploring ‘parts’ and ‘wholes.

RWI

The children are enjoying being in their phonics groups.  They will continue to bring home new books each Friday which they can keep at home to be returned the following Friday.  The children each have a sounds booklet in their book bag.  Please practice the sounds that your child has been taught that week to consolidate learning and boost confidence.

Weekly Blog

Our final day!

 

Hello Starlings and welcome last weekly blog page of Year One!

We wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all so much for everything. It has been a challenging year with remote learning and lock downs and we have finally made it to the end which feels bitter sweet. The children (and us) are so ready for a rest but to say goodbye to this lovely class of children will be difficult for us all.

Every single one of our lovely Starlings has put a huge effort into their learning this year and they have made huge amounts of progress. They have also grown so much and have made us so incredibly proud!

Phonics round-up

This week our groups have reviewed our set 2 and set 3 sounds and we have played games to help us to learn and review sounds.

Can we please ask that any RWI books you have at home be returned as soon as you can?

 

Fun-Day

The children had an absolute blast on the bouncy castle during our Friday fun-day and it was lovely to see the wide smiles on their faces and to hear the giggles and laughter after such a challenging year. Thank you for your contributions.
