Starlings: Blog items

24.4.20 Starlings Class Blog - Friday, by Miss Gillam

Date: 24th Apr 2020 @ 8:25am

Good morning to my super Starlings, HAPPY FRIDAY!

I can’t quite believe that it is Friday already, this week has gone so fast. Each Friday evening, I compete in an online quiz with lots of my friends. I have never really enjoyed going to a quiz before but it is something that has really brought my friends and I back together during lockdown. Have you had a video catch up with your friends recently?  Would you like to join in with a Friday Quiz? Here is a link to an addition quiz, remember to use your 100 square, number line and objects around the house to help you to solve each problem.

https://www.educationquizzes.com/ks1/maths/year-1-calculation-addition/

I have found a fantastic Art lesson on the Oakview National Academy website today, linking perfectly to the Art challenge that I set for you on our weekly timetable. This lesson focuses on creating a piece of work inspired by an artist called Andy Goldsworthy. Can you use natural materials to create your own rainbow? Can we fill our Twitter feed with beautiful rainbows?

Here are two of my favourite songs about rainbows. Why not Tweet yourself singing along?

Your maths lesson for today could be focused on the natural materials you have found in your garden. You could count how many items you have in total or solve addition and subtraction problems using what you found.

If I add my green items and my white items, how many would I have altogether? What would my number sentence be?  You could also sort the items by colour, size, shape etc.

____ green + _____ brown = _________              10 green leaves – 4 green leaves = _____

Please remember to tweet me photos of you being busy and having fun. It doesn't have to be photos about school work, it could be you playing out, baking, reading, dancing, relaxing etc. I would love to see photos of you all.

Have lots of fun today Starlings and have a wonderful weekend. I will speak to you again on Monday.

Love

Miss Gillam

Message from Mrs Powell

“Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind, and the third is to be kind.” – Henry James

What have you done that is kind?  What could you do today that is kind?  Could you take a picture and put it on Twitter so we can all be kind like you.

Remember what you are doing is amazing and we are so proud of you.  If you can, have a hot chocolate today. If not, have a cup of anything you like to drink and remember how very special we think you are!

23.4.20 Starlings Blog - Thursday, by Miss Gillam

Date: 23rd Apr 2020 @ 8:17am

Good morning my lovely Starlings, happy Thursday. I hope you had another wonderful day yesterday, I know I did. Did you see Mrs Southern, Mr Cliff and I completing our ‘Tongue Twister Challenge’ on Twitter? As you can see by our concentration faces, we found it tricky too!

Daily Jobs

Please remember to look at the attached timetable for some ideas to keep you busy. This document also contains a daily task list based on our foundation subjects. These are often the activities that the children find the most fun. Please remember that although we are giving you lots of different resources and links to use at home, you do not need to use them all each day. I would aim for one activity out of each box below each day. This may not happen every day and that is absolutely fine! Your child's mental health is much more important than a home learning task.

A little bit of maths

  • White Rose online lesson
  • BBC Bitesize lesson
  • Oak National Academy lesson
  • Mental Arithmetic fluency grid
  • Counting games

A little bit of writing

  • Child initiated writing
  • Writing sheet from the pack
  • BBC Bitesize lesson
  • Oak National Academy

Remember to use a capital letter, finger spaces, full stop and the conjunction ‘and’,

A little bit of reading

  • RWI Online lesson
  • Oxford Owl online reading and audio books (colour banded)
  • Phonics Play
  • Read a library book or a book from home

A little bit of topic work

  • Daily job set by Miss Gillam on our weekly task list/timetable
  • Oak National Academy
  • BBC Bitesize

While looking on the BBC Bitesize website I noticed a fantastic music lesson planned for today. If you fancy a bit of a change, check out the link below. You know how much I enjoy a good sing along.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4fgrj6

Here are some YouTube links to some other songs that we enjoyed singing together in school. This is your time to sing and dance like no one is watching!

I hope you are all continuing to keep active. Remember this is good for both our physical and mental health. Have you been going for a daily walk, run or cycle? Maybe doing some 5-A-Day activities, Go Noodle or Cosmic Yoga? Or simply putting on some music and dancing around the house, which I’ve been enjoying!

Keep smiling, work hard and remember to be kind.

Lots of love from

Miss Gillam

Hello everyone,

Hope you all had a wonderful day yesterday. I had a very relaxed day. I went for my early morning run and did lots of my busy work jobs during the day. I then enjoyed some early evening sunshine and ate my tea in the garden. This is known as al fresco dining. Perhaps you could try it too in your yard or garden too?

I wonder if you could use the BBC Bitesize online learning resources to find out what adjectives are today? There is a wonderful writing task to complete all about a yeti. Please complete any writing activities in your exercise book or on a piece of paper.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zd372sg

Your history work for today focuses on the life of the famous English fossil collector, dealer, and palaeontologist, Mary Anning. I can’t wait to see some of your tongue twister videos on Twitter. Perhaps (if I am feeling brave) I will post one too!  Please see our timetable and task list for more details.

Have fun with this my lovely Starlings.

Missing you all lots. Here are some pictures to remind you of some of the good times we have shared together. Do you remember your very first day in Starlings class? Haven’t you all grown?! It certainly made me smile looking back through some of our wonderful memories together. Daisy’s mum also found a beautiful photograph of a singing starling. Did you know that their beaks are mostly closed when they sing?

Lots of love from Miss Gillam

P.S. Remember how proud I am of each of you.

Good morning to my SUPER Starlings!

I hope you have all woken up feeling fresh and positive, ready for another day of learning from home with your most special people.

A fantastic new website was launched at the weekend called the Oak National Academy. https://www.thenational.academy/online-classroom/year-1/#subjects  I had a look yesterday and there are so many fantastic resources to support the children including maths lessons, writing lessons and some really exciting topic activities. They are delivered by teachers using videos and hopefully you will find them really useful and easy to use. There are lessons for each day of the week but please don't feel you need to do every day.

The BBC have also released some amazing online lessons and resources. Have a look at them here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons

It would be great to have some feedback on how you find the new resources and activities.

I am also going to attach lots of links below to some brilliant websites that I recommended on our blog previously, just as a little reminder. Please use these websites as you see fit, you do not need to use all of them every day.

20.4.20 Welcome Back Starlings, by Miss Gillam

Date: 20th Apr 2020 @ 8:56am

Good morning Starlings,

I hope you have enjoyed the Easter break and managed to spend lots of time outdoors enjoying the warmer weather. Again, I am sure it feels a little bit strange not coming into school this morning, as I know it has felt this way for me. I am SO proud of you all and know that you are going to continue to surprise me with how amazingly you face the start of our new term of home learning. Remember:

‘’You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.’’ A.A Milne

I have had another busy week completing my ‘Couch to 5k’ running program at home. Yesterday I ran for 20 minutes without stopping, something I never thought that I would be able to do. For me, this is a massive achievement that I am incredibly proud of after only being able to run for 4 minutes when I started the program at the start of lockdown. Are you proud of anything you have achieved this week? I would love to hear all about it. Please Tweet your successes or email me at admin@lostockgralam.cheshire.sch.uk.

I have attached our Starlings Class Timetable and Task List to help structure your week again this week – remember to use your packs to support you with the tasks set.

Maths

As lots of you are now starting to finish the number work in your packs, I would like you to access the online ‘White Rose’ maths lessons linked below. There is a daily maths lessons with attached independent activities to complete. These activities can be either printed off and completed or simply written into your exercise book if preferred.  What matters is the number work and not the presentation, so please do not feel the need to print these resources.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/

Select Summer Term – Week 1. If you have not already completed week 1 and 2, the activities are still available to use if you choose to use them.

I have also attached some documents containing ideas about active maths lesson’s which might be good fun to complete at home.

  • Cooking with Maths
  • Garden Maths
  • Lego Maths

Reading

At school, Read Write Inc is an important part of our daily routine, teaching our children to both read and spell. The children love the repetitive nature of the program and like that they can feel success in each and every session. I have attached a guide for how to access some fantastic phonic resources, including live RWI Speed Sound lessons.

Oxford Owl is a website school subscribes to and I have set up a username and password so that you can access all of the free online reading books at home. These books are colour banded and include many of the Read Write Inc story books that we read in school.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

Please click ‘My Class Login’

Username: Starlings1  Password: Home

Please continue to follow the attached timetable, this week is all about establishing routines and learning how to make home learning work for you and your family. Don’t worry if things don’t always go to plan, there is always tomorrow. I want you all to enjoy your first week back to home learning and remember that learning is all around us – Enjoy spending time outdoors where possible, cook, bake, read, play board games, but most importantly… HAVE FUN!

Remember Joe Wickes will be doing a live PE session this morning at 9am. Just search ‘The Body Coach TV’ on YouTube.

You know where I am if you need me. I am thinking of you all and can’t wait to see some of your SUPER learning on Twitter. Have fun and be kind.

Stay safe!

Lots of love from

Miss Gillam

Good morning my lovely Starlings heart

Wow, it is Friday again. Didn’t the weekend come around quickly? Well done to you all (and your adults) on having another fantastic week of home learning. Have you checked out our school Twitter feed recently?  If you click onto ‘Tweets & replies’, you will see lots of fantastic ideas which might inspire you to try something new too.

I woke up feeling excited today. Chester Zoo are doing another live virtual zoo day today, bringing the zoo to you. This can be accessed via both Facebook and Youtube by searching ‘Chester Zoo virtual zoo day’.

https://www.chesterzoo.org/virtual-zoo/

Why not use a page of your yellow book to write down interesting facts to teach your friends when we return to school or in your next Zoom video call? I will definitely be watching the Meerkat's and thinking about our amazing class story 'Meerkat Mail'.  Here is a video to remind you of the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcwuTRQ16MU

To encourage you to get outdoors where possible, I have attached some maths activities to complete outdoors. I have also attached some Lego maths activities! Please see the blue tab at the bottom of today's blog.

Please keep following our weekly timetable and remember to keep up with your daily speed sound and Power Maths/ White Rose maths lessons where possible.

As it is the Easter holidays, there is no expectation that the children should be doing any work over the next two weeks. I will however update the blog once each week with ideas on how to keep busy over the holidays for those who want to get involved.

Easter Break Home Learning

As a school, we have decided that the daily blogs will not continue through the Easter holidays. We think it’s important you all have a break from this kind of learning and instead play, bake, garden, spend time together and relax!

Here are some ideas for home learning ideas that you could do over the two week break, if you’d like!

Week 1

Reading

Continue with some form of daily reading – you reading to your child, your child reading to you or whole-family reading time! Maybe you could try listening to some audio books on https://stories.audible.com/start-listen. They are free for as long as schools are closed!

Zoo Visit

Go on a virtual visit to Chester Zoo with your family. On 27th March, Chester Zoo held a virtual zoo day where the live streamed footage from different enclosures around the zoo. Relive this experience by visiting the Chester Zoo YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZ9UagJLiMdBIFOHYwT7eLA

Enjoy!

I will be back with my next post next week, take care and keep smiling.

Have a lovely Easter and don’t eat too much chocolate!

“You will never have this day again. So make it count”

Good morning children, It may not feel like it but we are all very lucky to have each other. What are you going to do today to make it different from yesterday, we never get today again. What will you do today? How will you use it? Will you draw a picture? Do some PE? Help someone at home? I’m keeping a diary so that I can remember how I made each day count, could you? Stay safe and remember this: “I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”

I think this Friday we should be having hot chocolate for breakfast! Get your favourite mug, it is time for a special hot choc! We are so proud of you all. Mrs.P!

Hello Starlings

How are you this morning? It is lovely to see the sun shining once again this morning, isn’t it? What exciting adventures have you got planned for today?

I hope you are all continuing to keep active while spending more time at home. I am finding that a little bit of fresh air and some exercise improves my mood in a matter of minutes. Are you still remembering to do your Joe Wick’s PE lesson on YouTube? If you would like to try something new this week, have a look at the following active activities to brighten up your day:

I know how much Starlings enjoy being scientists so have attached some 10 activities that you can use at home to help children develop their science, technology, engineering and maths skills. These activities are easy to resource and provide children with the stimulus to talk about the world around them. If you see a link, you can explore how to extend these activities, you will need to sign up, for free, to access these materials. Don’t forget to share your work on social media #ScienceFromHome  @LostockGralamPr

Enjoy!

Please keep following our weekly timetable and remember to keep up with your daily speed sound and Power Maths/ White Rose maths lessons where possible. I am so proud of you!

Sending lots of love and hugs. Keep smiling!

Miss Gillam

P.S Have you played any board games yet? Let’s Tweet the games we play to help inspire others.

“You’re off to great places. Today is your day.” – Dr. Seuss

Dear children,

Where do you dream of going?  What do you want to do?  Just because we can’t visit new places doesn’t mean we can’t think about what we would like to do and where we could like to visit.  This saying also means you can do great things.  What great thing can do today?  This can be anything, big or small it is still an achievement.

Good morning!

I hope you are all keeping well and being the happy, helpful and respectful Starlings that I know and love. Are you ready for another busy day of home learning? Please see our attached timetable for a list of suggested activities to complete today.

I am still enjoying spending lots of time outdoors. I am keeping up with my couch to 5K running routine and have just completed my 6th run. This is quite an achievement for me. Perhaps you could spend some more time enjoying your outdoor spaces too?  Below are some fantastic ideas taken from the National Trust ’50 things to do before you are 11 3/4’ list.

  • Eat a picnic in your garden
  • Make a mud creation
  • Have fun with sticks
  • Wear a wild crown (made from natural materials)
  • Create some wild art
  • Join natures band – making music outdoors
  • Hunt for fossils and bones
  • Go stargazing
  • Go on a scavenger hunt
  • Make friends with bugs
  • Go cloud watching
  • Make a home for wildlife
  • Help a plant to grow
  • Watch the birds
  • Create and follow maps of your garden to find hidden treasure
  • Keep a nature diary
  • Watch the sunset
  • Make a camp fire

I have also attached a selection of prompts to help you to become nature spotters while enjoying the outdoors. Perhaps you could draw and write about what you see in you yellow book?

Does this quote remind your Starling of a little song we sang in school a couple of weeks ago? Perhaps they could sing it to you. Could they record it and send it to family members they are missing to help make them smile? Spread the happiness!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN-0UWJHDl4

I am missing you lots today and sending you all a big virtual hug! Have the loveliest of days with your very special families. Stay safe Starlings and remember: Ready, Respectful and Safe (Even at home).

Lots of love, Miss Gillam J

Good morning Starlings,

I hope you had a wonderful and restful weekend. I know I did! Thank you so much for all the super learning that you have been sharing on Twitter. It made my day seeing so many of your smiling faces on Friday, thank you! I am looking forward to the week ahead and I can’t wait to see what you are going to do this week.

I have attached a new timetable for the week below. Please, please remember that this is only a suggested timetable and that mental health is the most important part of education right now. We want you and your families to be happy at home, not worrying about the quantity of work being produced. You will notice that I have added a second sheet of suggested daily activities below the timetable. Again, these are optional activities and can be completed in addition to your daily maths, arithmetic, writing and phonic work. These activities are what the children generally enjoy most at school.

To support your Power Maths work this week, why now play one of the games below?

Good morning!

Happy Friday Starlings!

A. A. Milne Quote: “Bouncy trouncy flouncy pouncy fun fun fun fun ...

Wow, it is the end of your first week of learning from home. I have woken up feeling very positive and grateful this morning that we are all able to stay at home and keep ourselves safe during this strange time. I hope that you are all happy, smiley and having lots of fun at home. The sun is out AGAIN! I wonder what adventures you will have today?

Please continue once again to follow our attached timetable. Hopefully this is starting to feel like more of a routine for you now.

I have a little challenge for you today.  Can you make your own counting in 2s, 5s and 10s game?  By the end of Year One the children are expected to be able to count in multiples of 2, 5 and 10 quickly and from different starting points. For example

10  12  14  ___ ___ ___

They are also expected to be able to count in 2s five times. 2 4 6 8 10. Count in 10s eight times 10  20  30  40  50  60  70  80 etc.

To develop fluency in counting, please find ways to develop speed and accuracy through play. Why not try jumping, skipping, bouncing a ball, touching your toes, spinning around in a circle?

Oxford Owl have just released new RWI books on the website so over the weekend maybe you could have a read with your grown up.

I have attached a document that helps to explain what is happening to little people and ways to help manage feelings and emotions. It is quite a lengthy document but you could maybe start to have a little look through together. If you are feeling a little bit sad or fed up, this Resilience Toolkit will hopefully give you lots of positive ways you can look after your mind and brain during our time off school.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or Twitter.

Have a fabulous day Starlings,

Hello! Happy Thursday!

“It never hurts to keep looking for sunshine.”
- Eeyore

I have just loved hearing about what you have all been up to the past couple of days. A group video chat sounds like such fun, please continue to use twitter to show me some of the wonderful things you are doing at home with your amazing families.  Please find attached instructions for how to tag school so I can see your Tweets.

I have now completed day 2 of my ‘Couch to 5k’. I would be lying if I said that I was finding it easy, but I am enjoying being able to enjoy the lovely countryside views while I jog. I hope you are all managing to get outside and exercise in the sun too.

Please continue to follow our attached timetable. Could you play your own guess the shape activity using objects around the house? As I am sure you are now getting really speedy at completing your Power Maths work independently, please complete 2 pages today. In our usual maths lessons, we aim to complete 3 pages in a session.

https://youtu.be/QwRe_8c1OXo

I hope you are enjoying your writing activities. I wonder if some of you could make your own invisibility cloak to wear while completing your writing task today. I would love to see some pictures of you and your wonderful writing on Twitter today.

Other fun ideas:

  • Use chalk to draw and write outside
  • Make your very own hopscotch
  • Make your own den and play inside it
  • Research jokes with your adults online
  • Make your own obstacle course
  • Go on a toy scavenger hunt
  • Play ball games

Have a wonderful day J

With lots of love from

 Miss Gillam

Dear children,

I have a challenge for everyone to do in your house.  Can you think of three lovely things to happen each day, then either tell them to someone in your house or write them down?  I’m going to do this and hopefully we will all try and find our own sunshine.

Mrs Powell

PS. Wishing one of our lovely Starlings a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!  Love from Miss Gillam, Mrs Southern and ALL of Starlings Class xxx

25.3.20 Starlings - Happy Wednesday, by Miss Gillam

Date: 25th Mar 2020 @ 8:24am

Good morning, Starlings. Happy Wednesday!

‘’I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”
Winnie the Pooh

I hope you had another brilliant day yesterday and are starting to feel more settled into home schooling. It is going to take time to get used to, be strict with your routine and make sure you are making time to play games, have fun and just enjoy being together.

I hope you managed to access our fantastic speed sound lessons and Oxford Owl reading books yesterday.  I have noticed that the websites for both Phonicsplay and Oxford Owl are sometimes running slow or freezing as so many people are trying to access them at the same time. I have found that if I refresh the page a couple of minutes later they generally work perfectly again. Please let me know via email if you are having trouble accessing any of our resources.

Please continue to follow the attached timetable, completing the next page of your Power Maths, mental arithmetic and writing activities today. I would encourage you to also complete the brilliant Jo Wicks PE session, some Kidsbop dances and maybe even show your adults how brilliant you are at yoga.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JPVKD_UT-Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhYtcadR9nw

Please continue to read daily and listen to audiobooks online to mix things up a bit. One of our favourite class authors, Oliver Jeffers, is reading stories live each day. He also has many beautiful audiobooks available on his website for you to listen to. It would be lovely to listen to a few of his stories over the next few days and discuss what you notice about his style of writing, any similarities between stories and express opinion on which is his best story and why.

https://www.oliverjeffers.com/books#/abookaday/

During your creative time today, why not go outside and complete some observational drawing. I just love looking closely at flowers and drawing them using just a pencil. Could you also use natural materials to make a piece of art? You could use grass, stones,  leaves etc to create a spaceship, train or even a castle.

https://youtu.be/A3FydEEiyFA

As we start to miss our school friends and family members who don’t live in our house, it is important that we find ways to keep in touch. I have just loved using Facebook and Zoom to arrange times to video chat with my friends and family. I even completed a quiz with friends over video chat – great fun! Perhaps your adults could help you to have a group video chat with some of your Starling friends too? You could also write notes and letters to family members to keep them smiling too.

I miss you lots and think about you all every single day. I hope you are all feeling safe and well.

I will be in touch again tomorrow J. Until then, keep being kind, remember to share and allow yourself time to be quiet and alone when needed. If all else fails, sing and dance to one of our favourite songs from 'The Lion King'.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJEBV11ONHE

With lots of love and very best wishes,

Miss Gillam

Message from Mrs Powell

Dear children,

We all have more time, are you thinking about the things you like to do at home and at school?  Please tell someone all about it and keep talking, it is great to talk!

Good morning Starlings,

I hope you had a brilliant day yesterday and enjoyed getting stuck into your packs. I am quite sure we will have some very proud parents, amazed by your lovely listening and ‘thinking brains’.  Perhaps you could set up your own little recognition board today? Will you focus on good looking, good listening, brain thinking or super tidying!

At school, Read Write Inc is an important part of our daily routine. The children love the repetitive nature of the program and like that they can feel success in each and every session. I have attached a guide for how to access some fantastic phonic resources, including live RWI Speed sound lessons being recorded daily. Included in this document is an idea of which speed sound session your Starling should be watching. The group colours are based on what colour reading book your child is taking home from school. I have also attached a document showing you some useful apps/websites with a guide of how to use them. I hope they will be of some use to you.

Oxford Owl is a website school subscribes to and I have set up a username and password so that you can access all the free online reading books at home.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

Please click ‘My Class Login’

Username: Starlings1  Password: Home

Please continue to follow the attached timetable, this week is all about establishing new routines and learning how to make home learning work for you and your family. Don’t worry if things don’t always go to plan, there is always tomorrow.

I hope you are enjoying learning new things and spending extra time with your most special people.  I have decided to start jogging, completing the ‘Couch to 5k’ app on my phone. I have also set myself a skipping challenge. My current record is 18 seconds without tripping over. I have also made my own bath bombs AND had many cuddles from my cats, Paddy and Bella.

Keep yourselves busy, try new things and keep smiling.

With lots of love from

Miss Gillam

Dear children,

We have all started on a strange adventure, I wonder what we will learn to do over the next few months?   I think you will find that your parents are the best teachers!  Enjoy any activity you do for the first time, we are going to make bread in my house!

Note: Tomorrow we will have a live Read Write Inc. lesson to watch in addition to playing wonderful phonic games.  You will also be given access to reading books online via a free sign up website.

  • Maths – Can you go on a shape hunt around your house? Can you sort your shapes into 2D (flat) and 3D shapes?

Please complete page 3 in your booklet. In activity one, I would like you to draw a line matching the shape to its partner. I would then like you to circle the odd one out in activity two. Please talk to your adult as you complete the task, using the words below to explain how you know you are right.

circle square rectangle   triangle   cube   cuboid pyramid   sphere   cone

https://youtu.be/2cg-Uc556-Q

  • Mental Arithmetic – Please complete page 19 in your pack. We complete these grids weekly in school so the children should be familiar with how they work. Please ensure that the children write the number 9 in each star before solving the problems.

  • Writing – Where will this bus go next? Can you write sentences to describe where the bus will go?

E.g. The bus is going to the pretty beach and it is full of people.

The busy bus is going to the zoo and to the park.

Please start every sentence with a capital letter and end your sentence with a full stop. Adults – please help your Starling to fix any incorrect letter formation, check for finger spaces and encourage Fred Talking. In Year One, the children need to use their phonic knowledge to sound out words. As long and you can read their writing, this is meeting the expectation for the year.

  • Spellings – Please use P82 in your pack to help you to learn to both read and spell our Year One Common Exception Words’. The children are expected to be able to spell these words by the end of the year. Write your spellings in your yellow jotter book using your best joins.  Adults again, please check for incorrect letter formation.

  • Creative Choice Activity: Please have some fun playing with your toys, sing songs on YouTube, dance, play board games, plant seeds, tell jokes, draw, paint and make your family smile.

Thank you as always for your continued support and please get in touch if I can do anything else to support. Take care, look after each other and keep safe. I will be in touch again tomorrow. Have a wonderful day.

Starlings, I am so proud of you. Keep smiling and keep working hard.

With LOTS of love and best wishes,

Miss Gillam J

I am so proud of all of the children, enjoy your first day of learning in a different way and remember to plant those sunflower seeds.

Date: 27th Feb 2020 @ 7:09am

Starlings have had a fantastic first week back after our half term holiday.  We have loved discovering our new class text, completing our final gymnastics session and got to meet an very interesting visitor. Can your Starling tell you about John McCorkell and what important messages he taught us?

We have another busy week ahead of us.

In Writing, we will be delving into our new story, The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth.  We will write recounts, descriptive sentences and our own diary entry, thinking about the characters and setting in the story.

In our number work, we will be continuing to focus on subtraction by crossing 10. We will solve subtraction word problems using number tracks, bead strings and ten frames to help us.

In our topic lessons, we will be continuing to learn about the history of transport. We will consider how transport has impacted travel and tourism, discussing how and when the world became more accessible and why.

Reminders

  • We hope you are continuing to enjoy your bed time story books. Please remember to record these stories in your homework diary. This will count towards your three reads, earning you a raffle ticket and entry into our prize draw.
  • PE will now be every Monday with Mr Ault
  • We will be dressing up for World Book Day next Wednesday 4th March

Maths Challenge:

Can you complete the challenge grid? Choose a number between 1-10 and solve the problems.  Remember, it will be the same number in the star each time.

Thank you for your continued hard work and support at home.

Have a brilliant weekend,

Miss Gillam and Mrs Southern

Year 1- WB: 20.01.20, by Miss Gillam

Date: 17th Jan 2020 @ 5:45am

Starlings have had yet another busy and exciting week. We welcomed Phil into our classroom last Friday, who delivered our fantastic Creepy Crawly Show. Every single Starling touched or held one of the creatures Phil brought to see us. How brave and adventurous you all were! Check our school Twitter page for photographs.

Next week, our maths focus will be on addition and subtraction. We will learn how to add by counting on, find and make number bonds and add by making 10. To support your Starling with this at home, please continue to focus on both reading and writing numbers to 100 and finding one more and one less than any given number up to 100. The more secure the children are in number, the easier their calculating will become.

In Writing, we will be continuing with our unit of work based on the wonderful story ‘The Lion Inside’. We will be writing recounts based on mouse’s journey to meet the lion at the top of the craggy old rock. We will then explore character, making comparison to our work on character last week. We will discuss how the characters change as we move through the story and spend time reflecting on how we, as both friends and as learners, can be a little bit more mouse!

In our topic lessons this week we will be enjoying a religion focus afternoon and continuing to learn about animals in our science lessons. We will be identifying and naming a variety of common animals including, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We will even begin to use this scientific knowledge to make a PowerPoint in our computing lesson with Mrs Hulse, copying and pasting images of animals found online.

We are holding a Reading Meeting about how to support your child with reading at home next Wednesday 22nd January. You should have received a letter in the book bag with more information. If you have any questions or do not have a letter and let us know.

As always, if you have any questions or queries please do not hesitate to speak to us.

Year One - Week Beginning 13.1.20, by Miss Gillam

Date: 9th Jan 2020 @ 5:04pm

Starlings have had a super first week back after the Christmas break. They have explored tens and ones in maths and have written super predictions and described settings in our writing lessons. We have loved being back into the routine of Read Write Inc and have had lots of lovely catch up chat’s with our wonderful friends. We are all so excited to start our new ‘Animal Explorers’ topic tomorrow with an exciting (and slightly terrifying) Creepy Crawly Show.

In our writing lessons we have now started reading the exciting story ‘The Lion Inside’ by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. Next week we will be describing and comparing characters from the story. We will also hunt for words in the text with an –ed, -er, -est, or -ing ending and write exclamative sentences based on mouse’s thoughts.

Next week, the children will continue to focus on place value in our number work, identifying how many tens and ones numbers to 20 have. They will both compare and order numbers.

In our topic lessons, we will be creating an exciting explorer vehicle for Sunny the meerkat to travel around the world in. We will also learn about animals and their structures in our science lessons.

Just a little remind about home reading. Please can the children read with an adult at home at least three times each week as this is so important for their progress. Thank you for all of your continued support. It is lovely to welcome such happy, smiling and hardworking children every day.

Please come and see Mrs Southern or I if you have any questions or concerns.
