Toucans have been really enthusiastic about researching an endangered animal this week in our English lessons which demonstrates their passion for conservation and protection of these vulnerable animal species.

Curriculum:
In English, we will continue planning and writing our endangered animal leaflets containing elements of information, explanation, and persuasion. We will bring together all our learning so far to incorporate a range of writing features, such as modal verbs, adverbs, and use of parenthesis to incorporate extra information. In our shared reading lesson, we will explore the poem El Alamein by John Jarmain and focus on drawing inferences and making comparisons.
In maths, we will continue with our 4-a-day arithmetic questions each morning to further practice our four operations. We will look at dividing a fraction by an integer, look at fractions of amounts, and finding the whole when given a fractional amount.
In science, we will conduct a series of circuit investigations to explore what the effect is when adding extra batteries, components, and extending the length of wires.
In our history/geography lesson, we will begin to learn about WW2. We shall explore a timeline of key events in early WW2 and use our atlas and map skills to understand which countries were involved in this conflict.
In RE, the children will discuss the world that a range of Christian communities are trying to build from the research we have conducted over the last few lessons.

Children should complete pages 22 and 23 of their maths homework book this week and return it to school by Thursday 24th November. The homework this week focuses on multiplying and dividing fractions to consolidate the classwork we have completed this week.
Please also encourage your child to read for 15-20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings and times tables. Children need to record their reading in their homework diaries/planners. This really will help them with their reading speed and stamina.

Curriculum:
In English, we will be investigating a model report on an endangered animal to understand the writing features and sections of text involved. We will also be looking at researching our own endangered animal to gather facts and information that will later be used for our final writing pieces.
In maths, we will continue with our 4-a-day arithmetic questions each morning to further practice our four operations. We will look at multi-step problems involving fractions before moving onto multiplying fractions by an integer or another fraction.
In our history/geography lesson, we will investigate how WW1 came to an end and create a newspaper front page outlining the reasons why and how this conflict ended. We will also discuss the significance of WW1 and its lasting impact.
In RE, the children will continue to research a local, national, and global Christian community and examine the similarities and differences between these communities.
In PSHE / RSE, the children will be discussing the factors of a healthy relationship and marriage.

In English, we will continue to explore our new model text, ‘Can We Save The Tiger?’, and focus upon adding parenthesis using dashes, studying hybrid text type features, and writing a short report on kakapos. In our shared reading lesson, we will be comparing and contrasting two poems on blackouts during times of conflict.
In maths, we will continue with our 4-a-day arithmetic questions each morning to further practice our four operations. We will continue to focus on fractions with a particular emphasis on adding and subtracting fractions.
In science, we will continue with our new unit of electricity. We shall be looking at the effect of voltage on the components of a circuit through building a range of circuits and increasing the voltage within each.
In our history/geography lesson, we will complete a lesson focusing on remembrance day. We shall use ‘A Street Near You’ to research a local WW1 soldier to create a fact file and explore the significance of remembering those who fought for our country.

Welcome Back to Toucans’ Weekly Blog ?
Toucans have really impressed me this week with their mature, caring, and conscientious attitude to their first set of assessments in Year 6. We have also begun to think about our Christmas production (more details to follow) and held auditions to cast parts this week. It was lovely to meet so many of you this week to discuss how your child is settling into life in Year 6. We have also written letters in role as WW1 soldiers discussing life in the trenches with amazing writing results. Well done to all the children for working so hard this half term, and I wish you all a very happy and relaxing half term break.

- Book Trade – Message from our new school councillors. We will be holding a book trade on the first Friday back after half-term (Friday 5th November) straight after school. Curriculum:
In English, we begin to study our new focus text for this half term. ‘Can We Save The Tigers?’ will be our model text as we explore how to write to inform, explain and persuade. The children will begin to develop these skills to later write a short report on an endangered animal.
In maths, our focus will turn to fractions. We will begin at looking at equivalent fractions, before comparing and ordering fractions. We will continue to work on our arithmetic skills through our daily 4-a-day questions each morning.
In science, we will begin our new unit of study on electricity. The children will revise some of their previous learning from Year 4 before looking at how different circuit components are represented using circuit symbols.
In our history/geography lesson, we will continue to look at World War One. This week, we will explore how propaganda was used to change the role of different people and influence people’s opinions.
In art, we will begin to focus on using our drawing skills to sketch a conflict-themed image focusing upon light and shadows.
In RE, we will start a new unit which looks at the Christian community. In this week’s lesson, the children will discuss what it means to be part of a community and how Christians show their community spirit in different ways.
Homework:
Children in Year 6 will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers provided in the back of their homework book. If your child is finding the homework challenging, I will ensure that supervision is provided one lunchtime each week where your child can ask any questions or receive the support they need to complete the homework.

What a brilliant week we have had in Toucans class! We all enjoyed our exciting trip to Petty Pool, where the children really excelled at pushing themselves to try new things and represented our school so wonderfully.

I hope that you all had a wonderful summer holiday and are feeling ready and refreshed for the year ahead.
The highlight this first week back has been getting to know a little bit more about each and every special pupil in Toucans class.

A big well done to Toucans for putting on such a fantastic performance of Hoodwinked this week. We were so glad to get the opportunity to do this in front of our families.
Next week, a lot of our children will be out at Hartford High for 3 days Transition. We wish them the best of luck and hope they enjoy it.
On these days the rest of the children in Year 6 will be doing some Art and History lessons based on our topic - Mayans.
Also on Wednesday, the children will have an extra PE session with Mr A whilst the teachers will be meeting their new classes for next year.
Cricket as usual in the afternoon and Friday PE with Mr Ault.
Praise Star this week is Mia for excellent research in RE to find out about Sikhism.

Toucans have had a lovely week back this week. They have enjoyed the Platinum Jubilee Picnic, Hoodwinked practices and Sports Day preparations.
We are also looking forward to our residential on Monday. Please remember to check that you have packed everything on the kit list and have a packed lunch for Monday.
Keep an eye out for booking Hoodwinked tickets as I'm sure these will book up quickly. I have asked that all children have their costumes ready for next Thursday 16th June.
Well done to our Praise Star - Jack - for showing great leadership skills during our group work task this week. Also Top Table Superstars for lovely manners - Lauren and Robyn.
Next week will be so exciting with our Residentia, Monday - Wednesday and then we will spend most of the rest of the week preparing for our Robin Hood Production.

A huge congratulations to our wonderful Toucans who have done themselves proud this week. Well done everyone, you are all superstars and deserve to be our Praise Stars this week. The children are delighted that we will not be having anymore boosters sessions and we can now return to normal lessons!
Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on our writing lessons and these will be based on our class book 'Island'.
In Maths we will be focusing on Statistics.
We will also begin our Global Neighbours topic now and focus on some elements that the childen have missed from the curriculum over the past 2 years due to lockdowns, namely the water cycle and rivers topic in Geography.
Next week, Toucans will begin to rehearse again for our Hoodwinked production so we have lots to look forward to.

Toucans enjoyed their Team Games Final with Mr Ault on Wednesday. They worked well as part of a team and displayed a variety of throwing and catching skills to great effect. Next week, they will have Cricket as usual on Wednesday and Mr Ault for PE on Friday.
As we continue to prepare for the SATs, our lessons next week are focusing on English and Maths. Please continue to work through CGP books at home and in particular complete the pages on Ratio and Proportion in the Maths CGP book page 42 and 43 as this is what they have been learning with Mr Corkill this week.
Spellings for next week are - convenience, assistance, vehicle, solemn, apparently, attachment, sacrifice, principal, suspicious, precede, perceive, coordinate, innocence, ancient, cemetery, prejudice, disastrous, frequently, persuasion, borough. Again the children have been given a sheet with these words on in their diary and a practice sheet where they can test themselves using the same format that will appear in their SATs.
Please continue to read for 15mins daily to build up reading stamina.

It was lovely to welcome back everyone this week. I hope both children and parents had a restful break.
We have had a busy first week back getting ready for our SATS which will begin on Monday 9th May. The children have worked hard in our lessons which have focused on Maths and English. This will be the focus again for the next 2 weeks. The children have also enjoyed their cricket lesson and usual PE with Mr Ault. On Wednesday 27th April they will also have an extra PE lesson With Mr Ault, 9 - 10am as well as cricket in the afternoon which I know they will look forward to and enjoy.

Toucans had a fantastic trip to the Imperial War Museum last Wednesday. They enjoyed learning about how the lives of people have changed due to conflicts from World War 1 to the present day. The highlight for most of them was watching the 360 degree movies that were projected around the main exhibition area in the museum. This week they have been drawing this topic to a close and exploring the effect of rationing on people during and after World War 2.

It has been a great week back with Toucans. They enjoyed completing lots of poetry based activities on World Book Day and produced some fabulous River Poems. Next week the children will be learning about the dangerous effects of drugs and alcohol on their body as part of their Science work with Mr Corkill. We were delighted to see how keen the children were this week to complete their extra homework activities. Thank you for your support with this. We were especially pleased that the children wanted to do more!! We have said that they can complete more than one test in each of their books if they wish.
Just a reminder that our SATs information meeting will take place on Wednesday 26th January at 3:30pm.
We are still working with the children to ensure they all get the chance to have their pupil teacher meeting to tell us about how they are getting on and have a chance to share any targets that they or us want to work on together.
Our visit to the Imperial Museum Salford Quays has been postponed until after February half term due to Public Health advice. We are still waiting to hear back from the museum with a new date but we will let you know the new date when it is confirmed and the exact cost of the trip (approx. £10). Over the next week, we would like the children to catch up on any pages that they have missed in their Maths book. They should have completed Section One – apart from Roman Numerals and Decimals, Section 2 – apart from Multiplying and Dividing Decimals, Section 3 Fractions, Comparing Fractions, Multiplying Fractions and Dividing Fractions.
In preparation for our SATs the children will receive new CGP books for Reading and Spelling Punctuation and Grammar next week. They will be expected to complete a number of pages for homework each week. The children will record these homework pages in their homework diaries and I will also put them on the blog.
