Owls Home Learning Blog Monday 1st February, by Mrs O'Marah

Date: 30th Jan 2021 @ 4:23pm

Monday 1st February

Good morning Owls class and welcome back to another week of home learning. I hope you had a lovely weekend. Mrs. Campion, Mrs. Hoskins and I are so proud of how hard you are all working at home and in school so keep it up.

Today I have a phonics task, a handwriting task and a ‘No Outsiders’ task for you.

There is also a link for today’s Worship and a fitness challenge for you to try.

This week is a special week called ‘Wellbeing Week’, normally in school we would be having special shared Worships together and completing lots of fun activities like Yoga lessons in school. Because we cannot all be together at the moment, it has to be a little bit different. We have prepared a Wellbeing plan for you, you’ll be able to download it from Tapestry and the class blog. Please have a look and try out some of the suggested activities throughout the week and show us your efforts on Tapestry. We can’t wait to see them!

As always, please post an observation linked to today’s activities to show me how you have got on with your learning today. Any questions please ask and I will try my very best to answer and help you.

Read, Write, Inc.

Just like you did last week, I would like you to follow the link to the main RWI channel to access your phonics videos for today. Please note that because there are no lessons saved on the site over the weekend, the site will not be active and new lessons will not be uploaded until after 9:30am.

Set 1 please follow the link below and access 3 videos: speed sounds, word time and spelling.   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

The powerpoint lesson is available to download below or in video format if you would prefer .

Set 3 please follow the link below and access 3 videos: speed sounds, spelling, and longer words https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ

No Outsiders

You did so well with your No Outsiders task last week and I know you’ll do a super job this week too!

In today’s lesson you will be celebrating your unique, special selves. There is only one of you in the whole wide world and that is what makes you special. I am going to read the story ‘Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly’. After reading the story, I would like you to draw a picture of yourself with lots of the things that you love and make you unique so please have some paper and some colours ready.

You will find the powerpoint version attached below, or please click to watch the video above.

Handwriting

Today we are going to continue with our Handwriting work. I would like you to write 3 new letters. Today we are learning about a different letter family called the ‘down letters’ family. The letters we will learn and practise today are l, t and b.

It is really important when writing that we hold our pencil correctly so please have a look at the picture of me holding my pencil. In our Zoom call today I would like you to bring a pencil along so we can practise holding our pencils.

Please see the lesson video or alternatively see the PowerPoint.

Worship

Mrs. Powell has recorded a special worship video to launch Wellbeing week. Please click the link to find the video:  https://youtu.be/oPSLE27lh-0

Fitness Challenge:

For today’s fitness challenge I would like you to have a go at ‘Jack Jack’s Super Shapes’ challenge.

https://www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up/shake-ups/jack-jacks-super-shapes

As always, please post examples of your work and let me know how you are getting on using tapestry. Remember, if you experience technical issues with the tapestry app, please use the school spider blog if you have any difficulty accessing lesson materials. If you have any problems please send a message on tapestry or email the school office at admin@lostockgralam.cheshire.sch.uk and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Have fun!

·         Draw a ‘Don’t drop litter’ poster and display in a window at school or at home

·         Upcycle a plastic bottle into something new.

  •  Deliver a short(remote) presentation on the danger of litter to wildlife to the rest of their school or family

·         Design a new anti-littering slogan and logo for fast food, soft drinks or PPE litter

·         Interview an older person to ask them about their thoughts on if the amount of litter is increasing. (perhaps via zoom from home and the findings put into a document)

Swallows - Friday 29th January 2021, by Miss Gillam

Date: 28th Jan 2021 @ 6:18pm

Friday 29th January 2021

Good morning SUPER Swallows and welcome back to our blog.

I hope you are all well and ready for another busy day of super learning. It is our last day of home learning before the weekend. Let’s make it a good one!

Please see our task list and PowerPoint presentations below to see what your home learning tasks are for today. Please also remember to take a few moments to look at the class discussion page each day where I will be available to ‘chat’ to you about the work that I have set for that day. You can just pop on there to say hi or tell have a little chat with your friends. The children can type in their own messages. It is a lovely, safe way of us staying in touch.

Science – Can you identify the characteristics of living things?

SURPRISE! We thought we would mix things up a little bit today and swap our usual Maths lesson for a Science lesson. You have all worked SO hard and deserve a bit of a change.

Please see the talking Power point video linked below.

https://youtu.be/4AnM8MQjsxY

Here is the link to the Oak Academy video mentioned in the PowerPoint. Uploading the video to the PowerPoint was interfering with the sound quality, so I thought a link might be best today.

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-are-the-characteristics-of-living-things-70u30c#

Here is a fun science game which can be played to secure your knowledge of living and non-living things. Please remember to use MRS NERG to help you to give reasons.

https://www.turacogames.com/games/living-non-living/

  Times Tables

Please use Times Tables Rock Stars to learn your 2 x table. If you would like your child's log in details, please contact the school office via the admin address and they will email them across to you. Alternatively, you could play ‘Hit the Button’. Please section the 2, 5 or 10 x table.

Note: When you log in to TT Rock Stars, please select schools, students and then enter our school name and your login details.

 Writing

Can you answer questions to show what you have found out?

Please see the talking PowerPoint video linked below. I have recorded the instructions so just click play and then pause when it is time to complete an activity.  I hope you enjoy learning all about cats today.

  Reading

Please spend some time reading either the school book you took home with you or a book you have been reading at home each day.  Please also remember to use our Oxford Owl website to access reading books online. Here you can access Read Write Inc and other story books at your level.

Skylarks Home Learning 29.01.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 28th Jan 2021 @ 4:16pm

Friday 29th January

Good morning Skylarks and HAPPY FRIDAY 😊

How are you all today? I think you all deserve a big pat on the back for another fantastic week of home learning. You are all super stars!!

Don’t forget our final zoom session of the week starts at 8.40am this morning.

Today, and every Friday from now on, we will be swapping either our maths or English lesson for a science lesson which everyone should take part in. You will find all of the details about this below under the ‘Science’ section. Today we will be doing English and Science.

Writing

Hansel and Gretel: Again, please see the PowerPoint attached. Like the maths, I have recorded the instructions so just click on the audio button to hear what to do. Today, we will continue to look at the book ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm. Today we will be focussing on the Y5/6 spelling word list. We will use these words to create our own spelling doodle before applying some of these words in sentences.

If you cannot access the PowerPoint, please view the writing lesson at the following YouTube link:

https://youtu.be/5xOdsQW3_AQ

If you are watching the lesson through the YouTube link, you may need to pause the video at appropriate times to give yourself time to complete the tasks.

Science

Today we will be starting a new topic in science. We will be learning all about forces in our new sequence of lessons which will be posted on our blog every Friday. This will replace either a maths or English lesson on this day.

In today’s science lesson we will be answering the question ‘What are forces?’

Attached to our blog today, are some worksheets that you may wish to print, however this is not essential. You can simply record your answers on some plain/lined paper 😊

The science lesson is too large to attach as a PowerPoint so please access the lesson at the following YouTube link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a44HmTYECkg&feature=youtu.be

The link for the end of lesson quiz is below:

https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/what-are-forces-6dh3ec?step=3&activity=exit_quiz

Times Tables

This week can you practice your x11 tables? Don’t forget to practice other tables that you still find tricky too. Can you say it forwards and backwards? Can you write out the multiples of this number? Do you know the division facts? Why not use TTRS or hit the button to help you:

https://ttrockstars.com/

 https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

 Reading

It would also be super if you could spend 10-15 minutes each day reading your school book that you have taken home or another book you have been enjoying at home.

Remember to continue writing in your reading diary and get an adult to sign in, then we can collect our raffle tickets when we are back in school.

Why not tell me what book you are reading over on our discussion?

Spellings

Have a go at reading, saying in a sentence and spelling words with the suffix -ibly. You could make your own spelling doodle and add to it throughout the week. I will add a new word each day and then on Friday we can have a little quiz.

Today’s word: terribly

Previous words: horribly, possibly, responsibly, incredibly

We will be having a mini quiz on these five spelling words at the end of our English lesson today.

Story: You will find our story embedded into our Writing PowerPoint.

    Worship

Each Friday, Mrs Powell will record a story time worship based upon our No Outsiders work and our Christian value Respect. Today she is reading the story ‘Boogie Bear’ by David Walliams.

You can watch today’s worship here:

https://youtu.be/WYc5Xfs2_SQ

Have a wonderful weekend Skylarks! Stay safe, be kind and remember our Christian values in everything that you do 😊

Toucans Home Learning 28.1.21, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 27th Jan 2021 @ 6:51pm

Thursday 28th January 2021

Good morning Toucans.

I hope you got the chance yesterday to try out some of the new reading resources that I suggested below. I will leave them there for you to have a look today if you didn’t.

 Maths

FRACTIONS – comparing fractions - Please follow the attached PowerPoint and listen to Mrs Whittingham’s audio recordings to explain each slide.

Please watch this video if you can’t access the audio on the PowerPoint. Remember to just pause it when needed and you can play back too if required.

https://youtu.be/Urqj8d4sWhc

Remember to take a look at some of these Maths games to revise key facts on fractions.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/fractions-and-decimals

I was delighted to see so many mathematicians have a go at the extra challenge yesterday so I have attached another one to the blog for you today. It involves adding and subtracting fractions to complete the pyramids. I will look forward to seeing who takes up this challenge. Remember this is an optional extra, you don’t have to do it and there are some challenge questions already on the PowerPoint.

  Times Tables

Recap all your times tables using TTRockstars   https://ttrockstars.com/   Where can you get to on the leader board today? We have been so impressed with your daily scores.

Writing – A postcard from India

  • Know the difference between fact and opinion
  • Practice using the punctuation brackets and dashes

See the Power point attached. Like the Maths, Mrs Downing has recorded the instructions so just click on the audio button to hear what to do.

Please have a look at the following link about facts and opinions:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zn4dqp3

Please watch this video if you can’t access the audio on the PowerPoint. Remember to just pause it when needed and you can play back too if required.

  Reading

Toucans, we would love you to read a little each day of the school book you have or a book you have been reading at home or an edition of First News.

Take a look at the new library resource that the Oak Academy has provided. Each week they will provide a free book for you to read and you will learn more about the author.

https://library.thenational.academy/

This week the book to read is The Girl Who Stole an Elephant by Nizrana Farook

If you continue to record your reading in your diary and get an adult to sign your diary each time you read, you will still be able to collect your raffle tickets when we are back in school.

Here is another great resource to access lots of Reading Books.

Our FREE Storytime Online resources are still available to all via our website. Children use a QR code to access a range of stories being read by their authors. The link is: https://www.booksfortopics.com/storytime-online

Spellings

This week we will be looking at the spellings ei and ie.

We will focus on our final word today -  mischief

Could you try and write a silly short story using this word at least 5 times?

e.g. Yesterday, I heard some mischief upstairs. When I went up, I knew the little girl was up to something. Her face was full of mischief! You need to keep a close eye on these little people as they love mischief. Morning, noon and night, nothing but mischief. As soon as I turn my back, more mischief!

I have also attached a spelling activity for you to do. Check any spellings you need to using a dictionary.

Here is the link to an online dictionary - https://www.dictionary.com/

Spelling words:        ceiling, shriek, perceive, relief, receive, piece, protein, achieve, niece, mischief

 Worship

New Praise Hymn to sign

Be Still for the Presence of the Lord

Here is last week’s one for you to also have a go at.

Our God is a Great Big God

  #2021FitnessChallenge

Can you set up a fitness circuit course in your garden?

E.g. a spot for 10 star jumps, somewhere to run for 5 mins, maybe skip for 1 minute (you don’t need a skipping rope, just do the hand actions), throw and catch a ball whilst clapping between each catch etc. I’m sure you can come up with lots of ideas and I look forward to hearing about your fitness circuit on our Discussion today.

Have a great day everyone. Remember to use the Discussion page on School Spider to chat to us about your work today and upload your homework please for us to give you individual feedback on.

Best wishes from Mrs Downing, Mrs Whittingham and Mr Beswick.

Swallows - Tuesday 26th January 2021, by Miss Gillam

Date: 26th Jan 2021 @ 7:54am

Tuesday 26th January 2021

Hello and welcome back to Swallows class blog.

Did you have that special proud feeling yesterday? Were you able to orally re-tell the story of Saint George and the Dragon? Did you log in to Times Tables Rock Stars and choose your rock star name? Did you create a special poem thinking about our Christian value of respect? I just loved seeing what you have been getting up to on School Spider. Thank you for sharing your work with me, Swallows.

Maths – Can I make the same amount?  Please see the talking Power point video linked below. Please don’t worry that the videos appear to be a little bit longer. This is because the White Rose video is now embedded onto the PowerPoint. I hope this helps by having it all in one place. In case you want to open the video on a separate device or in a new tab, I have also put the link to this video below.

https://youtu.be/I0-tgxefB7o

Here is a link to the video shown during our PowerPoint today:

https://vimeo.com/471402395

  Times Tables

I was planning to introduce Times Tables Rock Stars to the children in the first week of January. We would have had some sessions using it in school so that I could then have sent the log in details home with the children to use as part of their weekly Maths homework, which is in line with our Key Stage Two classes. However, the National Lockdown prevented this from happening.

As we do not have a confirmed date for the children to return to school, I have set the children up on this system for them to use at home if you wish. The children can practise the times tables that I have set for them (these will predominantly be 2's, 5's and 10's in Y2) using a devise. As they play, they can earn coins and make their way up the leader board. This is a fun, engaging and interactive way for the children to learn their times tables.

If you would like your child's log in details, please contact the school office via the admin address and they will email them across to you. Ideally, I would have explained how this works with the children and they would have had time in class to navigate the game with me in the classroom. Therefore, you may wish to wait until we are back in school so that I can explain it to the children in detail.

https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student/36325

Note: When you log in, please select schools, students and then enter our school name and your login details.

 Writing

Can I re-tell the story of Saint George and the Dragon?

Please see the talking PowerPoint video linked below. Like the maths, I have recorded the instructions so just click play and then pause when it is time to complete an activity.

I have attached the story of ‘Saint George and the Dragon’ to our blog so that you can remind yourself of what happened in the story if you need to. Please do remember to use your story plan or the plan provided on the slides to help you.

Please don't worry about the date being wrong. It is the correct video PowerPoint, I have just named the YouTube video incorrectly. I am all confused with the days! Apologies.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIBboPwumKQ&feature=youtu.be

  Reading

Please spend some time reading either the school book you took home with you or a book you have been reading at home each day.  Please also remember to use our Oxford Owl website to access reading books online. Here you can access Read Write Inc and other story books at your level.

 Worship

Here is a link to our Open the Book worship today. Can you sing the song with me?

 ‘David and The Giant’

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXlaryAGOFA&feature=youtu.be

Have a BRILLIANT day Swallows and don’t forget to let me know how you are getting on with your learning today. I would love to see even more learning uploaded to the homework section of school spider today. Please remember that if you want to privately upload your work, you need to select the green ‘Upload your homework’ button which is located in the top right hand corner of the screen on most devices. The orange buttons which say ‘Add image’, ‘Add a file’ and ‘Add a YouTube video’ are for posting to the homework discussion. All of Swallows class can see this. When you upload your work, you can only attach 1 file to each home work task set. For this reason, you will need to photograph both pages of your maths work together and upload as one attachment.  I will still be able to see your work, don't worry. I will explain all of this during our Zoom call this morning.

See you on Zoom at 9:20.

Lots of love from
