Week Beginning 14.10.19, by Miss Beattie

Date: 9th Oct 2019 @ 12:37pm

What a super week we have had! Again, the children have made me extremely proud, particularly with their diary entry writing. Thank you to everyone who attended our Come and Join Us this week – I know how much your support means to the children.

In writing next week we will be focussing on letter writing. We will begin by looking at a range of letters to identify the features. We will then us this to help us plan and write our own letter in role as Tom from our book ‘Seal Surfer’. In maths, we will begin to look at addition in more detail, building up to using the written column method. In science, we will be carrying out an investigation to answer the question ‘How can we change the size of a shadow?’ In History, we will be using a variety of sources to find out more about the Stone Age.

Our spellings next week will look at silent letters: answer, island, February, length, strength, business, know, climb, wrong, calm

The Book Fair will be in school from Tuesday 8th October until Wednesday 16th October. It will be open from 3.20pm until 4pm every day in the year 5 classroom.

Reminder: Parents Evening will take place next week on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th October. If you have any questions about your appointment day or time, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Many thanks,

Hello! Another busy week ahead in Owls class.

In Literacy, the children will begin to think of other noises that may keep Mr Bear awake at night and use these to begin to make up their own narratives based on the Peace at Last story we have been reading in class.

In Maths, we will be exploring the number 3 in greater depth and looking at stories and songs linked to the number 3. We will also be looking at different ways we can make 3 and learning more about triangles.

We are very excited to be learning about night time animals and we have a very special surprise lined up for them next week. Keep your eyes peeled on twitter.

Please record any reading your child does in their reading diary. We are continuing to focus on letter and number formation in school and we are practising writing our name everyday. If you could also practise at home it would be much appreciated.

You should have received an appointment for Parents Evening on either Tuesday or Wednesday. If there are any problems or you are unsure of your time please come and ask.

Hope you all have a fanastic week and thank you for your continued support.

Swallows have had a super week being history detectives examining aretefacts relating to the Titanic. Next week, we will look at the time line of events that led upto the fateful crash. The children will be writing letters from characters in our story Troll Swap and exploring predictions. Our reading lessons will continue to focus on finding the exact information from the text to answer a question and not trying to remember. In Maths, we will explore number sequences and patterns using our place value knowledge. Our spellings will continue with the soft c sound:

pencil, notice, concert, face, price, circus, certain, concentrate, excellent, with (this is a word that we are having difficulty in spelling correctly)

Please ensure that PE kits are in school daily. Thank you for your support with home reading, this is so important for our children. We ask for 3 comments in the reading diaries from home each week in order for the children to receive a raffle ticket and make progress in their reading. The children have times tables homework on RockStars.

As always, please come and talk with myself or Mrs Elson if you have any queries about anything.

Many thanks

Toucans week beg. 07.10.19, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 2nd Oct 2019 @ 5:26pm

Toucans had a fantastic visit to Safety Central on Monday. Their behaviour was impeccable and their interest and engagement with all the activities was of the highest standard. It was ‘like being on a movie set’, said one pupil excitedly. The children learned about how to keep themselves safe on the road, by water and at the train station. They also looked at possible dangers within the home which could cause a fire. Ask them about shopping at Tesco, they had a great time learning about how to keep their bodies healthy!

Next week, the children will be continuing their writing based on our book 'Star of Fear, Star of Hope'. In Maths, they will be looking at written division methods, incorporated with reasoning and problem solving activities involving the four operations that we have covered – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. To help prepare for our trip to the Imperial War Museum on Wednesday 13th November, the children will begin to select an aspect of conflict that interests them most and begin their enquiry study on this. In RE, we will be finishing off our non-chronological report on Judaism. In PE, the children will continue to work on invasion games on Thursday with Mrs Whittingham and with Mr Ault on Friday.

KS2 Come and Join Wednesday 9th October 2pm

Come and join your child as they embark on their enquiry based study on an aspect of conflict e.g. propaganda, women during the wars, weapons etc.

Maths Homework

Thank you for helping your child to complete their maths homework last week. We were glad to see that by self-checking their own work the children were immediately able to explain what they found easy/difficult. Don’t forget if your child has found a topic particularly difficult, mark the page with a red dot and then we will work on these weaknesses as part of our intervention sessions in school.

Just to remind you, each week, your child will circle and date the page numbers that we would like them to complete that week, they can write it in their homework diaries and we will also put on the blog each week, the page numbers we would like them to do too! The books will go home on a Friday each week and will be due in on the following Wednesday.

This week, we would like them to complete pages 14 and 15 (Written Adding and Subtracting) due in on Wednesday 9th October.

The children will be finishing their project work for this award that they started last year by doing some litter picking in our local community on Thursday or Friday, weather permitting.

Aladdin

Any outstanding roles for our Christmas Production will be assigned on Friday 11th October and your child should have their own script. At the moment we are just working on roles in school but will let you know when we may need your child to stay behind after school to work on their acting/singing.

Some of our children will also be taking part in a girls’ football competition at Rudheath Senior Academy on Friday afternoon 1 – 3pm.

Week beginning 23.9.19

Hi Everyone,

Skylarks class have been working super hard this week and have produced some great quality pieces of work in maths and writing. We had a great time at the go run for fun event at Moss Farm leisure centre. Looking into next week, we will continue to work on our place value skills in maths and we will be working on and completing letter writing to Annie Edson Taylor (from our class book ‘Queen of the falls’). The children will be taking part in our National fitness day on the 25th September. They will be working with Teresa in the morning and there is lots of activities ready for the children to take part in.

Our new GCP books for maths homework have arrived in school and the children will be given them this Friday and they will self-mark the pages they have been given and bring their homework back in on the following Friday. Should anyone need any help with the homework before then, please bring these books back in on Wednesday. From this, I can support the children with aspects of the homework they do not understand.

Toucans class have worked so hard over the past week. They particularly enjoyed taking part in the Go Run for Fun event at Moss Farm on Wednesday afternoon. They were among 1500 children who took part and everyone received a t-shirt and a medal for their efforts!

Next week, the children will be continuing their writing based on our book 'Star of Fear, Star of Hope'. In Maths, they will be looking at written addition and subtraction methods. In Science, the children will be looking at the topic of 'Light' – What is light? What does it do? Can you see more than just your face in a mirror? Our on-going theme of conflict, sees us focusing on our Geography skills by locating oceans and continents so we gain a better understanding of where some of the wars have taken place. In History, we will begin to research the Civil Wars that took place in Great Britain. In RE, we will be exploring the big question: Who is a Jew? In PE, the children will be taking part in National Fitness Day which will take place on Wednesday this week so they need their PE kits on this day too. This workshop will be delivered by Theresa. They will also have their PE lesson with Mr Ault on Friday.

New this week…

Your children will come home with a new Maths revision book ‘KS2 Maths SATs Question Book’ on Friday. We briefly mentioned this at the ‘Meet the Teacher’ sessions but this is going to be our maths homework this year. The maths homework books are designed for the children to be able to complete independently and the answers are provided at the back of the books. However, if you can support your child by going through any answers they have got wrong this would help enormously. The books won’t be marked by us as they are designed to be marked at home as part of the revision process so that any incorrect answers are identified immediately and corrected. However, if your child has found a topic particularly difficult, mark the page with a red dot and then we will work on these weaknesses as part of our intervention sessions in school.

Each week, we will circle and date the page numbers that we would like them to complete that week, they can write it in their homework diaries and we will also put on the blog each week, the page numbers we would like them to do too! The books will go home on a Friday each week and will be due in on the following Wednesday.

This week, we would like them to complete pages 6 and 7 (Ordering Numbers) due in on Wednesday 25th September.

Our spelling words next week will focus on suffixes: -er, -ing, -y, -ed and –tion.

trader making grimy persuaded creating tickled appreciated observant fading creation

Some of our children will also be taking part in a football competition at Rudheath Senior Academy on Friday afternoon.

Thank you so much for all of your help with encouraging your children to read at home. We have really enjoyed discussing their books with them and reading your comments.

As always, just pop in and see us if you have any questions at all.

Hi Everyone

The children have been so busy with their learning, Mrs Elson and I are particularly proud of the presentation of maths work in our books, well done Swallows. This week we will have a session with Teresa on Wednesday 25th September as it is National Fitness Day. Our weekly gymnastics lesson is every Tuesday afternoon. Please can all children have their PE kits in school every day, as if we have a nice afternoon, we may sneak an extra session in! The children will be creating a new troll character in our writing lessons that we will use in a story shortly. We will continue to explore the conjunctions 'and, but and because' as well as creating exciting noun phrases eg The shy, unusual troll hides in the shadows during the day but at night time, he roams the streets searching for new friends.  We will deepen our understanding of how sources of evidence can teach us about the past in our Titanic lessons as we read letters that were found from passengers to their families. In Maths, the children will be exploring how to add and subtract multiples of 10 from a 2 digit number by exploring patterns and relationships. Just a reminder about home reading. Please can the children read with an adult at home at least three times a week as this is so important for their progress. Thank you for all of your continued support. It is lovely to welcome such happy, smiling children every day.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice and Mrs Elson

Thank you to all parents who attended the meet the teacher evening last week. It was lovely to meet you all!

Please note our Class Assembly is Wednesday 3rd June.

We have had a busy couple of weeks settling in to our new classroom routines and I am really impressed with how organised they are with their diaries.

This week we are continuing to focus on our class text ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne. In maths our place value work will focus on counting in steps of 25, 50 and 1000 and counting back to include negative numbers.

Our times table focus is 6x table. Have a go at playing Hit the Button to help your child practise. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

The children are really getting into our shared reading text ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Phillip Pullman and we will continue to read and focus on retrieval questions using skimming and scanning techniques.

Our spelling focus this week is words containing ‘sure’. After our spelling test last week the children highlighted the words they got correct.

Please have outdoor PE kit in school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Goldfinches Class are really working hard to follow our ‘Ready, Respectful, Safe’ rules and are enjoying achieving the class reward when all names are on the recognition board. Keep it up Goldfinches!

This week the children will be delving deeper into our class text 'Troll Swap'. They will be learning how to use noun phrases effectively to describe characters and setting as well as how to use the conjunctions 'and, because and but.' We will be consolidating the skill of 'find and copy' in our reading lessons, using evidence from the text to support our thinking. I have asked the children to be the teacher when they read with you at home and ask you their own 'find and copy' questions! In Maths we will be learning the value of 2 digit numbers and partitioning them into their tens and ones. The children will be counting in steps of 2, 5 and 10 and learning their ten times tables by looking at patterns and the realtionships between the multiplication and division fact eg 3 x 10 = 30 so there are 3 lots of 10 in 30 so 30 divided by 10 = 3. Our topic work is becoming more and more exciting as we explore the theme of 'Help'. Who helped during the Titanic disaster? Did the right help arrive on time? How could the help have been improved? It is great to see the children being so enthusiastic in their learning. Mrs Elson and I are continuing to reinforce the ideas of being Ready, Respectful and Safe with the children.

A reminder that our visit to the Liverpool Maritime Museum is on Tuesday 19th November. Further details to follow nearer the time.

As always please come and talk with myself or Mrs Elson if you have any queries. Please find attached this week's spelling list which focuses on question words. We have a little spelling test each Friday.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice
