Starlings WB 29.11.21, by Mrs Esling

Date: 25th Nov 2021 @ 9:48pm

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog!

We have had such a lovely week.  We have been practising the songs for our Christmas play and I have to say we are so proud of how well they are doing and they already sound amazing!

We are also loving the enthusiasm and excitement the children are showing with our new class text ‘Nibbles’.  The work they have already produced  is fantastic

You may have had a visit from Bertie or Matilda.  Starlings class are looking at the seasons and the changes that occur and in particular, we have been discussing how it goes darker much earlier in Autumn and Winter than it does in Spring and Summer.

?.

Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy sharing stories with your Starling at home this week. The children will continue to bring home a Read Write Inc book, a book bag book and a bedtime story each week. This provides them with a variety of familiar, new and challenging texts to read. Bedtime storybooks are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

English

This week we the children have been introduced to our new class text ‘Nibbles’. He has already nibbled through the book and some paper and now he has nibbled through Goldilocks and the three bears and eaten Baby Bear’s porridge! This week Nibbles has eaten his way through Little Red and taken her cape! What will he do next?

Maths

Starlings class have continued to explore the inverse operations of numbers.  We have also been looking at how addition is commutative and even when the numbers change the sum remains the same ( 4 + 2 = 6, 2 + 4 = 6)

Robins Wk Beg 22nd November 2021, by Mrs Rice

Date: 18th Nov 2021 @ 8:16pm

Hi Everyone

School has sounded wonderful this week with the happy sounds of children singing Christmas play songs. It is getting very exciting as we lead upto our KS2 Christmas production of Hoodwinked. Our class dance is coming along nicely, thank you for the Lumberjack costumes that we have had so far.

A reminder that tomorrow (Friday 19th November) is Children in Need day. Please bring pennies for Pudsey and wear own clothes/pajamas.

I have noticed a big improvement in the children's handwriting and presentation this week. I was extremely proud to share the children's books at our local cluster moderation. Several local primary schools gathered together and we moderated each other's work to check our assessments are accurate.

Next week in Writing, we are contining to read Winter's Child. The pages are beautifully illustrated and the children are really enjoying this story so far. We will be applying our understanding of sentence structure to character and setting descriptions. The children will expore the characters of Tom, his mother and Nana through wriitng conversations, giving them time to practise their use of inverted commas for direct speech.

The children are using their inference skills to work out how a character is feeling, what their motives might have been and why they have carried out certain actions in The Ice Palace story. They will learn more about the character of Ivan and infer what kind of person he is from the clues in the text. We will also continue to read out loud to our partners using pace, fluency and expression to bring the story to life.

In Maths, we will continue our addition work. The children have added ones crossing the tens boundary this week using partitioning. Next week we will add tens and ones to 3 digit numbers using a number line to calculate. We will also practise our multiplication and division facts, trying to give speedy answers.

In Science,  we will explore how we see things and how light travels to our eyes. The children really enjoyed their light investigation this week, exploring why we can't see dull objects in the dark.

We will be busy making Christmas crafts to be sold at the Christmas Fair as well as continuing to learn the songs for our play. The children will also have their German lesson with Mrs Judge where they will learn how to tell people where they live in German. They will enjoy a fabulous Ukuele lesson with Dan, PE with Mr Ault as well as their Cricket lesson on Wednesday.

A very busy and fun filled week! As always, please come and see me if you have any queries.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan

Skylarks WB 22.11.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 18th Nov 2021 @ 8:39am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

We have had another super week of learning in Skylarks Class. The children have loved using their learning from our trip to the Lion Salt Works in their topic and science lessons. Our rehearsals for the Christmas play are also well underway and we can’t wait to show you what we have been practicing.

Reminders:

  • Christmas Play Costumes - Our class will perform a party scene dance so your child will need to wear party clothes (e.g. a colourful t-shirt and jeans/legging, a dress, sparkly shoes, etc.). Please do not go out and buy anything new for our performance, any type of party wear your child already owns will be perfect. We would like these costumes to be in school for Monday 29th November 2021.

Next Week (W.B. 22.11.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. We will be exploring characters more closely by completing a Venn diagram to compare the appearance and personality traits of 3 characters, before role-playing and writing out a conversation between these characters using inverted commas.

In our reading lessons next week, we will continue to explore our shared reading text ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti. We will be focussing on evaluating the authors’ language choice, including figurative language. This will link nicely with our writing lessons where we have been learning all about personification, similes, metaphors and alliteration.

In maths we will continue to look at line graphs. We will look again at how to draw our own line graphs and will work collaboratively with our peers to solve reasoning and problem-solving questions about statistics. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In RE we will continue to explore the titles given to Jesus at Christmas time. This week we will look at the titles ‘The Word’ and ‘Light’ and will explore what we think these titles might mean.

During our topic day, we will continue to work on our information leaflets about the Lion Salt Works. We will look at the process of making salt, the importance of the salt works and the effect the salt industry had on Northwich.

Our PE days for the Autumn will continue to be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Athletics) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete pages 70 and 71 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 26th November. This homework is looking interpreting and drawing line graphs.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

Swallows Blog 15.11.2021, by Miss Gillam

Date: 12th Nov 2021 @ 6:35am

Hello and welcome back to Swallows class blog!

Top Table: Joseph O          Praise Book: Olivia

Swallows have had another wonderful week of super learning and have one again made Mrs Elson and I so proud of their fantastic attitudes towards their learning. We enjoyed a beautiful Remembrance Day service at Lostock war memorial on Thursday and our children showed respect as the reflected on the lives lost in the World Wars. We also planted Poppy seeds into our new garden of Remembrance. We can’t wait to watch them grown.

Thank you so much to those who have accessed Times Tables Rock Stars at home this week. If you have not managed to log in yet, please have a go this week. It will really help to prepare you for our weekly times tables quiz in the classroom. As always, should if you need any help with this.

Christmas play rehearsals have begun and we are well on the way to learning the eight songs which feature in our play this year. Swallows have learnt how to read a script and have a good understanding of the story. Our next job is to learn our lines by heart. Please encourage your child to learn their lines at home. It would help if they knew who spoke before them so that they know when to come in.

Reminders:

As the weather is turning colder and wetter now, please ensure your child has a coat in school every day.

Next Week

Maths

Our Maths work will continue to focus on addition and subtraction this week. We will use number lines and place value counters to help us to calculate. Our aim is to really understand what happens as we bridge ten.

We will also continue to learn our 10 x table this week. Please remember that we will have our times tables quiz each Friday.  Your child must show that they can answer all questions correctly three times before moving onto the silver challenge.

Writing

Our English work will continue to focus on the beautiful story ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ this week. Swallows will explore the use of different conjunctions and use them to extend their sentences. We will use co-coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or) to join clauses. We will then apply our knowledge of conjunctions by writing a setting description.

Hi Everyone

Wow, what an amazing week we have had. The children became scientists in our "Amazing Light" workshop led by Chester Cathedral. They explored opaque, transparant and translucent materials in a variety of ways using lots of exciting equipment. We enjoyed a beautiful Remembrance Day service at the war memorial this week, our children showed such repect, we were really proud of them. I am also really pleased with the progress the children are making in their ukuele music lessons. The children are learning how to read music, how to use pitch and the musical terms for parts of songs egchorus and bridge. We have enjoyed learning more songs for our Christmas production, Hoodwinked. Thank you for the costumes that we have had already, we can keep them safe in school. If you are having any problems in sourcing a checked shirt, please let me know.

In our Writing lessons next week we are really focusing on what makes a sentence. We are going back to basics to embed the fact that a sentence needs a noun and a verb. We will explore joining two clauses with a conjunction. Our descriptive writing will focus on winter scenes from our beautiful story Winter's Child by Angela McCallister. Our reading lessons will continue to be based upon The Ice Palace by Robert Swindells. We will explore new winter vocabulary in both texts, practise reading out loud using punctuation to enhance meaning and ask questions about the characters and plot.

The children will be adding 3 digit numbers using partitioning, number lines and the column method. We will support this new learning with practical equipment such as place value counters and base ten equipment. We will also be working on our rapid recall of times tables facts. We use speed grids for this which the children really enjoy. Please log into TTRockstars where games have been set for the children to practise their times tables facts. Regular times tables and division facts practise is crucial for the retention of these important facts.

In RE, the children will continue to explore how and why Christians support certain charities and world organisations such as Fair Trading. We will look at Bible quotes that inspire this charitable work and see if they are still relevant today. Mrs Judge will visit us again to teach the children their German lesson. So far they have learnt how to say hello, goodbye, my name is.... and numbers to ten. They have enjoyed singing happy birthday also. In History, we will explore where people who lived in the Stone Age lived and why. We will learn about their reasons for nomadic life, their temporary shelters and cave dwelling.

As always, please come and chat with me if you have any questions or concerns.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan

Goldfinches WB 15.11.21, by Mrs Evans

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 8:27pm

Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

We have had a wonderfully busy week and have enjoyed a wide range of activities and lessons.

Star of the week goes to: Violet

Top Table award goes to: Thomas

Reminders:

As the weather is turning colder and wetter now, please ensure your child has a coat in school every day.

It is lovely to hear that choir club is returning and that so many Goldfinches are keen to be involved. All rehearsals for the Christmas light switch on will be during school time for the next two weeks.

Worship: This week in worship we have focused on Remembrance and remembered those who gave their lives in the World Wars and who are still serving their countries today. We had a wonderful Remembrance service with Mrs Kendrick and Mr Cliff after planting our Poppy seeds into our new garden of Remembrance.

Next Week:

Reading and Writing: This week we have focused on writing accurate simple and compound sentences based on our book Leon and the Place Between. Next week we will use our skills to help us write a diary entry.

Reading homework- I am continuing to encourage the children to choose from a range of books around the classroom. We have just had a delivery of 50 of the top 100 recommended books for Year 4 as well as a lovely gift of books from Mrs Esling and her grown up children. So many choices!

Spelling homework: This week our spelling rule continues with the ei, ey and eigh patterns. As lots of them are homophones, please support your child to understand the meanings.

This week’s words: drey, whey, convey, survey, eighth, eighteen, weight, neigh, neighbour, sleigh

Your child has brought a blank spelling doodle home as another way of practising.

Maths: This week we have begun our unit on addition and subtraction and have been exploring how the number bonds to 10 and 20, support us to find number bonds to 100 and 1000 e.g. 74 + 26 =100 so 740 + 260 = 1000

Times Tables Homework:

https://ttrockstars.com/

Try Hit the Button and choose the division 6x table facts to help prepare for our Gold x6 tables test which lots of children are now working on.  The next times tables will be 9x tables.

Have a go at Maths Fishing this week to help you practise https://mathsframe.co.uk/en/resources/resource/306/Maths-Fishing-Multiplication

Science: We have continued our new Teeth topic by learning about the parts of a tooth and the importance of enamel. Next week we will predict what happens to a tooth left in acid and record the results over a few days.

Geography: We have mapped the countries Ancient Greece used to be in on a map of Europe and have located some of the important city states: Athens, Sparta, Crete, Corinth and Olympia.

History/Art: We will look in detail at the artwork from ancient Greek pots and try to tell the story of the legacy they have left to learn about what life was like in Ancient Greek times. We will use the Greek pots as inspiration for our own designs and learn to sketch a human figure in proportion.

RE: Good News stories from the Bible.

German: Use our number knowledge and tell people our age.

PE: Our Dance lessons on Wednesday afternoons will help us prepare for our Christmas play and Mr Ault will teach Netball on Fridays. Please remember to tie long hair back and remove earrings on PE days.

PSHCE: Our Heart Smart focus is: Don’t forget to let love in.

Music: We are enjoying learning the words to the songs for Hoodwinked.

Mrs Shimmin has been a wonderful part of Goldfinches class this term and we know she will continue her amazing work in the Nest. We welcome Mr Beswick to the Goldfinch team from next week and are looking forward to working with him.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to discuss your child. Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Evans, Mrs Judge and Mrs Shimmin.

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog!

We have had such a lovely week and the children are especially our new writing text ‘Nibbles’.

?.

Can you believe we are now on the Christmas stretch and what exciting things we have to look forward to this half term

Skylarks WB 15.11.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 11th Nov 2021 @ 7:39am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

We have had another super week of learning in Skylarks Class. The children represented our school so wonderfully during our visit to the Lion Salt Works and learnt an abundance of new knowledge. I’m sure you have heard all about our trip from your child, but you can also see lots of photos from the day on our school Twitter @LostockGralamPr

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. We will be focusing most of our learning around building characterisation. We will look at how difference language devices (e.g. similes, alliteration, metaphors) and speech can help to develop our characters within stories. We will also look at using figurative language devices in a winter poem.

In our reading lessons next week, we will continue to explore our shared reading text ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti. We will be focussing on identifying the themes and conventions in the story. We will be discussing the reoccurring themes and the ‘must-have’ characteristics of this type of story.

In maths we will be looking at line graphs. We will begin by learning how to read line graphs, before moving on to drawing our own. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In science, the children will investigate which processes are most effective for separating materials. We will use filtering, sieving, evaporating and magnetic attraction to separate different mixtures and solutions. This will link nicely to our work carried out at the Lion Salt Works on Tuesday.

During our topic day, we will use our learning from the Lion Salt Works to help us produce an information leaflet about the process of pumping brine and extracting salt, the importance of the salt works and the effect the salt industry had on Northwich.

The children should complete pages 48 and 49 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 19th November. This homework is looking finding the perimeter of shapes.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 19th November will continue to focus on words containing the suffix -able:

adaptable, predictable, knowledgeable, beatable, comfortable, reasonable, available, fashionable, miserable, believable

Please encourage your child to learn the root word before adding the -able suffix.

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ?

Hi Everyone

What a wonderful start to this half term we have had! I have been so impressed with the children's attitudes to learning and their engagement in all lessons. We have enjoyed our first Cricket PE lesson, our first Ukuele lesson (where we played and sang at the same time!) and learnt the first song from our Christmas production, Hoodwinked! It is just wonderful to hear children singing again in school. The children also enoyed exploring the properties of shape during our Maths Day.

Mrs Rice's spelling group have explored common exception words that contain a silent letter or a lerter that we pronounce quietly. Our words to learn this week are:

library, length, strength, business, February, island, answer

Mrs Brennan's spelling group have explored adding the suffix er and est with words ending in a y. The y is dropped and chamged to an i before adding er and est

For example: happy, happier, happiest.

Next week, we will begin to explore a new story in our Writing lessons, Winter's Child by Angela McAllister. We will be using illustrations from the book to make predictions, explore a range of new vocabulary associated with the text and focus on our sentence structure and punctuation. This is a beautiful story with inviting illustrations, a great stocking filler! In our Reading lessons, we will focus on the pace of our independent reading, our expression and intonation to enhance meaning when reading out loud. The story, The Ice Palace by Robert Swindell will be the focus text in our Reading lessons. We will infer a character's feelings and actions by hunting for clues in the text and 'reading between the lines'.

We will begin our new Science topic, Light - How we see things. The children will explore different sources of light and how how light travels. Our virtual Stone Age visitor will join us again and help us to learn about life in PreHistoric times. We are also taking part in a Science Light and Faith workshop, led by a lady from Chester Cathedral which we are extremely looking forward to.

Times Tables Rock Stars has lots of times tables games and practice for the children. We are currently working on our 5 times tables and the children are making great progress with their rapid recall of the facts. Please continue to practise times tables with your children at home as having these facts at the ends of their finger tips, makes so many other areas of Maths more accessable.

Thank you for your support with home reading. The children are enjoying reading a wide variety of stories and poems from our class library. This website, has the Top 100 Reads for each year group on, we have a selction of texts from Year Two and Year Three recommendations for the children to explore in class. These could make fantastic Christmas presents!

https://www.thereaderteacher.com/year3

The children will have PE with Mr Ault on a Monday and now a Cricket lesson on a Wednesday. Please ensure that your child comes to school in warm school PE uniform on Mondays and Wednesdays as the lessons can be outside.

Please always ask me if you have any questions or queries about anything.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan xxx

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog!

We hope you enjoyed a lovely half term and had lots of fun as a family.

Can you believe we are now on the Christmas stretch and what exciting things we have to look forward to this half term.

Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy sharing stories with your Starling at home this week. Bedtime storybooks are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

Toucans week beg. 8.11.21, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 4th Nov 2021 @ 5:27pm

Week beg 8th November 2021

We have been really impressed by the positive attitudes shown by all the children this week. They have clearly worked hard to learn their lines for our production already. This is great as it means we can focus on the acting and singing in school.

If your child does not know their lines please encourage them to learn them this week. Also if anyone is struggling to get a costume together please don’t panic but just speak to us. We want to keep all costumes as simple as possible and we will add props in school so it will be clear who is who!

For homework, we will set another 2 pages in their Maths books this week, please see below. We would also like them to log onto Times Tables Rockstars at least 3 times a week for 15 mins. They have their log in details in the front of their homework diaries if needed.

Remember to encourage your child to read for 15 – 20 mins daily and to record their reading in their diaries. We have stapled a list of recommended books for Year 6 children in the front of their diaries and we would like them to read some of these throughout the year. We have a lot of these texts in our class library so the children can borrow them from school or they might find some at their local library. We have asked them to tick off the books that that they read on the list.

Robins Blog Wk Beg 18.10.21, by Mrs Rice

Date: 15th Oct 2021 @ 12:32pm

Hi Everyone

Robins have had another wonderful week of learning together. I have been so impressed with the friendship they have shown to each other. The children have written short stories based on our book Seal Surfer by Michael Foremen and have used prespositions of time and place well.

Next week, we will be writing letters in role as the characters from the story using new ways to begin each paragraph. The children will be using their mastery keys of noun phrases, prepsotions and speech punctuation to ensure that their writing is fantastic.  In Maths, we will be exploring place value problem solving and puzzles as we apply our knowledge and understanding to new contexts. The children are getting speedier and speedier at completing their times tables grids each week, it is lovely to watch their confidence growing with this. Times Tables Rock Stars is all set up for the children to play on at home. Please encourage your children to practise their 2, 5 and 10 times tables regularly at home. We are working on giving speedy answers within five seconds!

My spelling group this week will look at the suffix ly. Our new words to lean are:

humbly, gently, simply, horribly, carefully, finally, quietly and completely.

Mrs Brennan's spelling group are exploring the suffixes er and est. Their new words to learn are:

nicer, nicest, happier, happiest, wilder, wildest

We will meet our virtual Stone Age visitor again as we learn about the clothes, tools and food that he has. The children will place key events in time along a time line using their skill of chronology. In Science, we will explore thefunction of the human skeleton and learn the names of important bones. We are also looking forward to our next German lesson where we will continue to practise greeting each other and saying please/thankyou. In RE, the children will explore Bible stories that show our understanding of God. We will discuss how God is presented in the story and reflect on what God means to us personally.

I am really excited to let you know that after the half term holidays, Robins class will have another PE lesson on a Thursday afternoon. They will be taught outside by a cricket coach. Please send your child in to school wearing their PE kits next half term on a Monday and a Thursday. The children will need tracksuit bottoms and a school PE hoodie as it will be cold. Please ensure they also have a waterproof coat with them.

As always, please come and speak to me if you have any worries or questions. Thank you for your continued support.

Love from Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan.

STARLINGS WB 18.10.21, by Mrs Esling

Date: 14th Oct 2021 @ 4:22pm

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog! We have had another super week of learning in Starlings Class and I can’t quite believe his is the last week of the first half term.  ?.

We continue to be proud of all our Starlings as they continue to try their best and work hard in their lessons.

Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy sharing stories with your Starling at home this week. The children will continue to bring home a Read Write Inc book, a book bag book and a bedtime story each week. This provides them with a variety of familiar, new and challenging texts to read. Bedtime story books are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

English

In our English lessons next week, we will be coming to the end of our unit.  As a class we have created a story pathway help us sequence the events. We will then write our own adventure story based on the ‘Lost and Found text’ but with a new character.

Maths

Next week we will be exploring the composition of numbers 6-10 and we will continue to discuss odd and even numbers.
