Week beg 18th October 2021

The children are all beginning to get excited about which parts they will play in our Christmas Production ‘Hoodwinked’. I have been delighted to see how enthusiastically they are reading their scripts. This week we will hold the auditions so that the children will have their parts sorted before half term and can begin to think about their costumes. The aim is that they will learn their lines over half term so we can begin rehearsals the first week back.

Once again it has been a delight to see all the Maths homework completed on time and to a high standard.

For homework, we will set another 2 pages in their Maths books this week, please see below. We would also like them to log onto Times Tables Rockstars at least 3 times a week for 15 mins. They have got their log in details in the front of their homework diaries and they also all logged on in class today so that we know they will be able to this by themselves at home.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

I can’t quite believe we are looking ahead to the final week of the half term. Time really does fly when you’re having fun. We have had another excellent week in Skylarks Class!

Next week (W.B. 18.10.21)

In our English lesson next week, we will be using our plans produced this week to help us write a sequence of diaries entries in role as Annie Edson Taylor. We will be recapping the mastery keys learnt in this topic and applying these in our writing (e.g. using paragraphs, using commas after fronted adverbial and writing for an intended audience/purpose).

In maths we will be looking at mental calculations and inverse operations. We will also be applying our knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction to help use solve tricky problems.

In science we will continue our learning on soluble and insoluble materials. The children will work collaboratively to plan their own investigations to find out which factors affect the rate of dissolving. The children must choose which variables to keep the same and which to change, ensuring they plan a fair test.

In RE we will bring together all of our learning from our Discipleship topic to answer the following questions: How does the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ help people to follow Jesus? How does Jesus want Christians to live out each verse in their lives?

During our topic day we will begin to look at our Year 5 theme of ‘Identity’. We will be thinking about our own identity and the identity of Northwich by sharing what we know already.

Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Homework

In year 5 the children will be set a weekly maths homework that they should complete and mark at home using the answers in the back of the homework book.

If your child is finding the homework tricky, Mrs Hulse and I will ensure that supervision is provided on a Wednesday lunchtime for your child to ask any questions or receive some support to complete their homework.

The children should complete pages 12 and 13 of their maths book to be returned by Thursday 21st October. This homework is looking written addition and subtraction.

Please encourage your child to use column method which we have learnt in school.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Thursday 21st October will be the next 10 words in the Y5/6 statutory word list:

available, average, awkward, bargain, bruise, category, cemetery, committee, communicate, community

Please remember that the words from the Y5/6 list are trickier than our spellings which follow a specific spelling rule. If your child is finding them really difficult, encourage them to focus on just 5 words to learn rather than all 10 ?

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Date: 7th Oct 2021 @ 10:09pm

Hello everyone and welcome back to Swallows weekly blog!

Another busy week of super learning for our very lovely Swallows Class. I am so proud of the hard-working and enthusiastic attitudes shown in our classroom every single day. Keep it up Swallows!

We are looking forward to another week of being busy little bee’s next week. Please take a look at what we will be learning below.

English

Our English work will focus on a brand new text this week. We will ask questions about animals, research facts and read other stories linking to the text. We will explore character and write a description of a very special journey. I wonder what our new text will be?

Maths

Our Maths learning will continue to focus on addition and subjection next week. We will be adding and subtracting 10s and 1s. To support your Swallow with this at home, it would be helpful to play games involving finding 10 more, 10 less, 1 more and 1 less than any given number to 100.

We also request that if your child wears trainers with laces they are able to independently retie them if they become undone otherwise can they please wear trainers with a Velcro fastening.

Design & technology

Thank you so much for all the ‘junk modelling’ you kindly brought in for the children.   They had a fantastic ‘tinkering’ session where they designed and built a vehicle after which we tested it for strength and suitability.  We discovered that we needed to design something that would enable the wheels to turn and we also needed something stronger than a straw to support the wheels!

Skylarks WB 11.10.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 7th Oct 2021 @ 7:57am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

Another super week of learning for Skylarks Class. I am so proud of the hard-working and enthusiastic attitude shown in our classroom every single day. Keep it up Skylarks!

Next week (W.B. 11.10.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will finish reading our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will use our retrieval and summarising skills to help us create a timeline of the whole story. We will then look closely at a range of diary entries to help us understand the features of them. This will help us as we plan and write our own sequence of diary entries to end this unit of work.

In our reading lessons we will read about more inspirational woman in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will continue to focus on drawing inferences, justifying our answers with evidence (E.g. inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives) and making comparisons within and across texts.

In maths we will be moving on to look at the formal written methods of addition and subtraction, to include 6-digit numbers. We will also learn how we can use estimation and rounding to help us check an answer.

In science we will be defining the terms ‘soluble’ and ‘insoluble’. We will then predict which materials will dissolve and which won’t before carrying out an investigation to see if our predictions were correct.

In RE we will continue to debate the point, ‘Are Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount still important today?’ This week, we will record our responses in our book, giving evidence to support our opinion.

We will also have a computing day on Friday where we will continue to work on our ‘Keynote’ presentations about how computers impact our lives.

Our PE days for the Autumn will be Thursday (Swimming) and Friday (Games) so your child should come to school in their PE kit on these days. Please remember PE kits should either be school kits or plain black/blue. On Thursday your child will also need to have their swimming costume and towel in a plastic bag.

Next week we will have a one-off additional PE session on Wednesday 13th October (cricket) and so the children may come to school in their PE on this day.

The children should complete page 11 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 15th October. This homework is looking at Roman numerals.

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 15th October will continue to focus on words with the -ible suffix:

invisible, edible, flexible, resistible, responsible, impossible, irreversible, convertible

Please encourage your child to learn the root word before adding the -ible suffix.

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Swallows Blog WB 04.10.2021, by Miss Gillam

Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 5:14pm

Hello Swallows families and welcome back to our weekly blog! We have had another wonderful week of super learning in Swallows Class and Miss Gillam and Mrs Elson have been so proud of us all.

Our fantastic attitudes towards our learning helped us to fill our recognition board once again this week, earning us a special class treat. Well done, Swallows!

We are looking forward to another week of being busy little bee’s next week. Please take a look at what we will be learning below.

English

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our class text ‘Troll Swap’ by Leigh Hodgkinson. We will be sequencing ideas to create our own adventure stories. We will orally re-tell the story, create a story map and finally write a new and exciting story using our newly created characters. We will then focus on the skill of editing and improving our own work.

Maths

Our Maths learning will continue to focus on addition and subjection next week. We will be exploring number facts and fact families, comparing numbers, finding related facts and making number bonds to 100.

Spellings – During the Autumn term our spellings will be focused on the Year Two Common Exception words. These are words that the children will come across frequently in both their reading and writing. We will complete a spelling quiz in class every Friday. Please use your spelling whiteboard to help you to learn your spellings each week. We will write your child's score in their diary next each week. This will be written next to the spellings they have been tested on that day. This will be on the page from the previous week's page.

To make learning our spellings more fun, we created a special roll and spell game in school this week. Please use this game to learn your spellings at home this week. If you haven’t got a dice, please write the numbers 1-6 on pieces of paper and select a number as a lucky dip. You can then still enjoy the game. ?

Toucans Week beg. 4th October, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 5:12pm

Week beg 4th October 2021

I can’t believe it is October already! It has been lovely chatting to parents this week to let everyone know how their child has settled into Year 6. Thank you for your continuous support in ensuring your child is settled and doing their best in school. We will continue to focus on handwriting next week so please encourage your child to use their joined handwriting when learning their spellings at home.

Again it has been a delight to see all Maths homework completed on time and to a high standard. It was also lovely to hear so many parents say that they didn’t need to give their child any help with their tasks. I love to see and hear about this independence! We are also pleased to see the enthusiasm that the class are showing towards their reading at home. So many of them are recording their daily reading – 20mins – in their diaries independently. Thank you for your support with this.

Homework

Spellings for next week will focus will focus on Suffixes

Spellings will be tested on Friday 8th October – sprinting, shouted, sweetest, jumping, prouder, floated, rusting, hunter, yawning, asked

Maths Homework – Key Stage Two Maths SATs Question Book and Times Tables Rockstars

In school we have been Addition and Subtraction this week so the homework is Written Methods for Addition and Subtraction page 10 and page 11 of the SATs book.

Remember you will be set 2 pages to do weekly which you can mark yourself using the answers at the back of the book.

(Maths homework will be set on a Thursday and if the children could bring their books back into school for the following Wednesday so we can check them that would be great. If they are struggling with anything, please don’t hesitate to send the book back sooner and we will do some extra work with them in school)

Curriculum

Maths – Next week we will continue our work on the Four Operations by focusing on Multiplication and Division.

History – We will be finding out more about the War of the Roses and our War Artist – Paul Nash

RE – We will be focusing on our P4C question – If we are all different why should we be treated equally? We will also research how different religions celebrate the birth of a child.

Science – Light

Next week we will continue finding out about light through a variety of investigations.

PE day will be on Wednesday (Cricket Coach) and on Friday (Mr Ault). Children can come to school wearing their PE uniform on these days.

Kind regards,

Mrs Whittingham, Mrs Downing, Mr Beswick and Mr Corkill

Skylarks WB 4.10.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 30th Sep 2021 @ 8:10am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

This week Skylarks have continued to work exceptionally hard in all of our lessons. They have shown such enthusiasm towards everything that they are doing in school and I am sure you are enjoying hearing about their exciting learning when they arrive home.

I am looking forward to chatting with you tomorrow, Friday 1st October, during out Parent/Teacher phone calls. If you are having any problems booking your slot, please contact the office who will be happy to help.

Next week (W.B. 4.10.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will extend our learning on recount writing from last week’s lessons. We will first create our own story map which we will use to help us write a first-person recount of Annie’s journey along the river. We will also be consolidating our understanding of fronted adverbials and commas and will be applying these throughout our writing.

In maths we will consolidate our learning on place value by solving tricky reasoning and problem solving questions. We will then move on to look at the formal written method of addition to include 6-digit numbers.

In science we will use our investigation plans from the previous lesson to help us answer the question ‘Which material is most effective for the inner lining of a lunch box to keep it cool?’ After completing our investigation, we will choose an appropriate way to present our findings (e.g. table, bar chart, line graph).

In RE we will use our Christian values of respect and friendship to have a class debate. We will use our learning from our discipleship topic to help us debate the question, ‘Do you think Jesus’ teachings from the Sermon on the Mount are still important today?’

During our topic day we will extend our learning on rivers. We will recap the different features of rivers, before thinking about why rivers are so important (e.g. leisure, tourism, power, industry and transport).

The children should complete page 10 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 8th October. This homework is looking at rounding numbers.

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 8th October will focus on words with the -ible suffix:

possible, terrible, legible, horrible, sensible, reversible, credible, visible

Please encourage your child to learn the root word before adding the -ible suffix.

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Miss Beattie x

I have really enjoyed talking to you and letting you know how fantastically well your little Starling has settled into Year 1.

Thank you so much for your continued support, Mrs Southern and I  really appreciate it.

Our gorgeous Starlings, together with the other children in KS1, have really enjoyed attending worship in the hall. We have also all been on a tour of the school as this is a brand-new experience for them all.

We continue to be proud of all our Starlings as they continue to try their best and work hard in their lessons.

Thank you so much for taking the time to enjoy sharing stories with your Starling at home this week. The children will continue to bring home a Read Write Inc book, a book bag book and a bedtime story each week. This provides them with a variety of familiar, new and challenging texts to read. Bedtime storybooks are to be enjoyed with an adult. Reading TO the children ensures that they experience the magic of a story coming to life and have a purpose and love of reading.

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our text ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.  We have been discussing how the different characters have felt during the story and we will be continuing with this next week when we create an emotions graph together.  We have also been enjoying our additional class text ‘Meerkat mail’ by Emily Gravett. So Far Sunny has left home and has sent a postcard to his family telling them of his adventures.

Toucans week beg. 27th September, by Mrs Whittingham

Date: 23rd Sep 2021 @ 12:27pm

Week beg 27th September 2021

Toucans have worked hard again this week. They have all amazed us with their positive attitude towards everything that they are doing in school, from learning to play cricket, playing their musical instruments, learning German and working so hard to improve their handwriting. We have spent a lot of time over the past couple of weeks to ensure everyone is joining their letters correctly. Please encourage your child to use their joined handwriting when learning their spellings at home.

Again it has been a delight to see all Maths homework completed on time and to a high standard. We are also pleased to see the enthusiasm that the class are showing towards their reading at home. So many of them are recording their daily reading – 20mins – in their diaries independently. Thank you for your support with this.

Skylarks WB 27.09.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 23rd Sep 2021 @ 8:00am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

We have had another fantastic week in Skylarks Class and the children have all blown me away with their knowledge of the Romans and keen interest to learn more! I can’t wait to continue to explore our topics further next week ?

Parent phone calls

Hopefully you have managed to book your Parents’ Evening phone call through school spider for next week. Skylark’s phone calls will take place on Friday 1st October. This will be an opportunity to discuss how the children have settled into year 5 and will give you the chance to ask any questions you may have. If you are having any problems booking your slot, please contact the office who will be happy to help.

Next week (W.B. 27.09.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will continue to work on our Newspaper reports from last week, before moving on to look at first-person recount writing.

In maths we will continue to focus on place value and will extend our learning to include numbers to 1,000,000. We will place these numbers on number lines, compare and order numbers and round to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In science we will continue our learning on thermal insulators and thermal conductors. We will become scientists and will plan our own investigation to answer the enquiry question ‘Which material is most effective for the inner lining of a lunch box to keep it cool?’

In RE we will continue to explore the book of Matthew. We will read a range of verses, considering the meaning of each and drawing out any advice given to Christians on how they should live.

During our topic day we will use our mapping skills to locate rivers in and around Northwich. We will then focus on developing our understanding of technical vocabulary needed to help us with our future learning on rivers. We will use our ICT skills to help us produce a river glossary.

The children should complete page 9 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 1st October. This homework is looking at counting in powers of 10 (e.g. counting in jumps of 10, 100, 1000, 10,000, 100,000).

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 1st October will be the first 10 words from the Year 5/6 statutory word list:

accommodate, accompany, according, achieve, aggressive, amateur, ancient, apparent, appreciate, attached

These words are understandably more difficult than our spellings which follow a specific spelling rule. However, please remember that these spellings are set for both Year 5 and Year 6 children and so we have lots of time to revisit and revise them over the next two years. If your child is finding them really tricky, encourage them to focus on just 5 words to learn rather than all 10 ?

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ?

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Miss Beattie x

Starlings WB 27.09.21, by Mrs Esling

Date: 22nd Sep 2021 @ 8:36pm

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog! We have had another super week of learning in Starlings Class ?

We continue to be proud of all our Starlings as they continue to try their best and work hard in their lessons. We have been super historians this week when we used our skills and knowledge to place a range of bikes in chronological order.

English

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our text ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers and we will be discussing how the characters in the book are feeling at different points in the story.

Maths

Next week we will be exploring ordinal numbers before progressing to the composition of numbers 0 to 5.  We will be participating in lots of practical activities and using our maths resources to support our learning.

Robins Wk Beg 20.09.21, by Mrs Rice

Date: 16th Sep 2021 @ 10:43pm

Welcome to Robins Weekly Blog

We have had a wonderful week in Robins class. I am really pleased with how the children have settled down to their learning routines in class. We are filling our recognition board regularly and have enjoyed playing 'hide and seek' and 'stuck in the mud' as our rewards together. This week, our Top Table award goes to Alexa and our Prasie Book award goes to Alexia. Well done girls :)

You will be able to book a 'Parents Evening' phonecall on Monday 20th September. This will be a ten minute phonecall to touch base and discuss how the children have settled. Year Three phonecalls are on Tuesday 28th September. I am really looking forward to talking to you all and getting to know you :)

Our spelling quizes will take place each Friday morning. This week, some children will have spellings that begin with the 'wr' sound such as 'wrong' and some children will have spellings that begin with the prefix dis and in such as 'disconnect and invisible'. The children wil have a list of their spellings in their reading diaries that they will tick/dot to let you know which words they spelt correctly during the quiz.

Reading - We have given the children a reading book from our class library. This may be a RWI book aimed at your child's reading level plus a story/non fiction book from our class library to share with you at home or a text from our class library. Please let me know if you feel the texts the children are selecting are too challenging or not challenging enough. I have now extended our class library with texts that the children are familiar with from Year Two for them to enjoy. We are continuing to read The Sea Book by Charlottle Milner in our whole class reading lessons. This week we will continue to discover new vocabulary, retrieve literal information and explore how the features of a non fiction text and it's structure all help the reader to understand the information.

Writing - The children are really enjoying reading 'Seal Surfer' by Micheal Foreman. We have loved learning new facts about seals and watching video clips of them in their natural environments. We will be writing a non chronological report about seals using paragraphs to organise our information. We will also be using prepositions of place and noun phrases to enhance the detail in our sentences.

Maths - We will continue to explore our place value knowledge and understanding of three digit numbers. The children will represent three digit numbers in a variety of ways, learning the value of each digit and positioning them on a numberline. Each morning, on entering the classroom, the children complete a '4 a day' arithmetic activity. This involves questions from all four operations ( addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) so that these skills are continuously developing. We have also introduced a times tables grid which allows the children to pratise and rehearse their mutliplication and divsion facts. This term, we will consolidate the 2, 5 and 10 times tables as well as introducing the three and four times tables. I have set weekly games on Times Tables Rock Stars for the children to enjoy.

Geography - We will be consolidating Year Two knowledge of features of English forests verses a rain forest, looking at the human and physical features of both. The children will use atlases to locate rain forests around the world, exploring reasons as to why they are positioned near to the equator.

RE - The children will explore a variety of Bible stories, considering the message for Christians that each one gives about God.

PE - Mr Ault will teach the children how to play football, focusing on space, pace and invasion techniques.

DTThe children are learning about the seasonality of food and will be making apple crumble as they have identified that apples are in season in the autumn in the uk. I will send a letter out with further information.

Thank you for your continued support with reading, spellings and times tables at home. These three things are the basis of our weekly homework.

Please contact me if you have any questions, I am aways available for you.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice and Mrs Brennan

Goldfinches WB 20.09.21, by Mrs Evans

Date: 16th Sep 2021 @ 9:02pm

Welcome to Goldfinches’ Weekly Blog

Another busy week for our new Year 4s! The children are settling beautifully and have continued to make us so proud of their calmness, kindness and enthusiasm to get back into learning. We look forward to another week of learning next week.

Star of the week goes to: Alexa

Top Table award goes to: Kyan

This week in worship we have focused on our Christian Value of Friendship and have enjoyed discussion, practical and reflective activities based around this theme. There have been some lovely moments of kindness between the children throughout the week with children from the nest making flapjack for us to share and making friendship bracelets for each other.

Next Week:

Reading and Writing: We will continue to explore more of our writing text ‘Gorilla’ by Anthony Browne and find out about real Gorillas. Our reading text ‘A world full of animal stories’ will help us to explore asking questions in order to find out more and delve deeper.

Reading homework- I’m so impressed by how many children are reading regularly at home. Please continue to support your child to read for 10-20 minutes daily. Across the week this can be a mixture of your child reading to themselves and talking about the book with you, your child reading aloud to you and you reading aloud to your child. Please sign in your child’s diary when s/he has read. The children will be supported to choose from a range of books available in the classroom. Reading can include articles from Children’s First News Papers and science or animal magazines (like National Geographic, Chester Zoo magazines) as well as Fact and research books on linked science and history topics.

Spellings: our spelling focus this week is: words containing 'sure' measure, pleasure, treasure, leisure, enclosure, measuring, measurement, measured, treasured, leisurely

Maths: Monday Maths will focus on angles and arithmetic.

Maths with Mrs Evans will focus on representing 4 digit numbers in different ways including on a number line. We will continue to work on arithmetic activities on some afternoons and will work on our times tables daily.

Times Tables Homework: Times tables are a big focus for Year 4 so each week I will be linking an online times table game or sending a paper game home with the children to support them to practise in a fun way.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/times-tables/coconut-multiples - try coconut multiples for the 6x table or…

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Use Hit the Button to recap the times tables for last year (3X, 4X, 8X) and have a go at the 6X. If you are a tables whizz, have a go at the mixed game.

The children have also all got their TTRockstars logins stuck in the front of their diaries. https://ttrockstars.com/

Science: Our science focus for this half term is Sound so we will enjoy exploring how sounds are heard this week.

History: Next week we will order the events we have learned about in history in chronological order and identify where the Ancient Greek civilisation fits in on the time line.

PE: We will enjoy cricket on Wednesdays (until half term) and Gymnastics and team building games with Mr Ault on Fridays

PSHCE: Our focus to begin the year is ‘Get Heart Smart’ and we will also be reading and exploring a range of No Outsiders books. This week we enjoyed getting Happy Snappy to reflect on the things we are grateful for.

Music: We loved our music lesson this week and being introduced to the song ‘Dancing Queen’ by ABBA. Lots of our Goldfinches recognised this famous song.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us via the office if you would like to discuss anything about your child.

Mrs Evans, Mrs Judge and Mrs Shimmin.

Skylarks WB 20.09.21, by Miss Beattie

Date: 16th Sep 2021 @ 7:42am

Hello everyone and welcome back to Skylarks weekly blog ?

The children in Skylarks Class have had another super week of learning. I have particular enjoyed hearing about their swimming achievements. Mrs Evans has been so impressed with the children’s effort and attitudes during their lessons. Keep it up Skylarks!

Next week (W.B. 20.09.21)

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our book ‘Queen of the Falls’ by Chris Van Allsburg. We will first be looking at letter writing, taking account of audience and purpose. We will also consider our first impressions of different characters, as well as the impressions the characters may have of each other. We will then use this to help us write a newspaper report prior to Annie’s daredevil feat.

In our reading lessons we will read about more inspirational woman in our text ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’. We will focus on drawing inferences and justifying our answers with evidence (E.g. inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives). We will also make comparisons within and across texts.

In maths we will continue to focus on place value. Specifically, we will look at rounding numbers within 100,000 to the nearest 10, 100, 1000 and 10,000. We will also revise Roman numeral base numbers to help us write numbers to 10,000. We will also continue to consolidate our knowledge of the four operations through daily 4-a-day activities.

In science we will learn about thermal insulators and thermal conductors and will be developing our conclusion writing skills. We will look at a table of results showing the temperature of tea in different containers over a one-hour period, before concluding what we can learn from the table of results.

In RE we will be exploring the ‘Salt and Light’ verses from Matthew 5:13-15. We will read the verses together and draw annotated pictures to help us understand them better.

During our topic day we will use our mapping skills to gain a better understanding of where the Romans conquered when they first arrived in Britain. We will also look at how Britain changed once the Roman Empire arrived and the legacy the Roman Empire left behind.

The children should complete page 8 of their maths book to be returned by Friday 24th September. This homework is looking at place value (ordering and comparing big numbers).

Please also encourage your child to read for 20 minutes each evening and practice their spellings/times tables. The following websites are both great for times tables practice:

https://ttrockstars.com/

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Our spellings for the quiz on Friday 24th September will continue to focus on words ending with the silent letter b:

climb, subtle, bomb, lamb, doubted, plumber, crumbling, numbing

Please remember that if you have any questions or queries, do not hesitate to get in contact ? Have a lovely weekend everyone!

STARLINGS CLASS

Hello Starling families and welcome to our weekly blog! We have had another super week of learning in Skylarks Class ?

We continue to be proud of all our Starlings as they continue to try their best and work hard in their lessons

English

In our English lessons next week, we will continue to explore our text ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers.  We have already used clues from the text to make predictions about what the story may be about. Robins wk beg 13.09.21, by Mrs Rice

Date: 12th Sep 2021 @ 9:15pm

Hi Everyone

A very warm welcome to Robins Class.

Mrs Brennan and I have loved getting to know everybody, we are going to have a wonderful year.

Our PE day this term is on a Monday, the children will be taught on a Monday afternoon by Mr Ault. We will also be having a weekly German lesson on a Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Judge which is very exciting :)

Each Tuesday afternoon, we will have a times tables quiz. We will let you know which times table your child is working on and will put a sticker into their reading diary to let you know their weekly score. Our weekly spelling quiz will take place on a Friday morning. They will be words containing the spelling rule/pattern that we have been exploring throughout the week or based upon the statutory words for Y3 from the National Curriculum.

We are currently reading Seal Surfer by Michael Foreman in our Writing lessons. Our focuses are on using a rich and varied vocabulary, organising our writing into paragraphs and using prepositions of time, place and cause.  We are also enjoying learning new facts about life in the oceans using The Sea Book by Charlotte Milner in our whole class Reading lessons.

It has been delightful to sing with your children and hear their voices after such a long time. Their singing has warmed our hearts.

Please feel free to come and talk to me at any time if you have a question or a concern. I am also available on the phone or via email. I am really looking forward to a fabulous year ahead.

Many thanks

Mrs Rice

Swallows WB: 13.9.21, by Miss Gillam

Date: 9th Sep 2021 @ 11:28pm

Welcome to Swallows Class Blog

Miss Gillam and Mrs Elson have been so impressed with how kind, calm and hard-working Swallows have been this week. Swallows have been ready, respectful and safe and even managed to fill their class recognition board this week. We have enjoyed learning our new class routines and had lots of fun exploring our focus Christian Value for this half term, friendship. We have enjoyed starting our new writing and reading focus texts this week, begun our maths focus on place value and completed our Read Write Inc assessments. We are now in brand new groups, ready to get started with learning new sounds next week. We also enjoyed our first PE and Music lessons with Mr Ault and Dan this week.

Next week:

English – We will continue to explore our exciting new text ‘Troll Swap by Leigh Hodgkinson next week, making links to other familiar troll stories.  We will write character descriptions and write letters to Timothy and Tabitha’s grandparents.

Our Read Write Inc group work will begin next week. We will learn a new sound each day which will be shared in homework diaries each week.

Maths – In Maths we will be focusing on the place value of numbers to 100. We will represent, compare and order numbers.

Swallows will enjoy a weekly ukulele lesson with Dan each Thursday afternoon until October half term.

Homework

Reading – Please spend 10 – 20 minutes reading each day. This can be a combination of Read Write Inc and bedtime story books. Please remember the importance of your child listening to you read during this time too.

Spellings – During the Autumn term our spellings will be focused on the Year Two Common Exception words. These are words that the children will come across frequently in both their reading and writing. We will complete a spelling quiz in class every Friday. Please use the spelling whiteboard in your child’s bag to help them to learn their spellings each week.
